Mickey - In Foster (Adoption Fee Sponsored!)'s Story

Ba Da Ba Ba Ba, Adopt Mickey!
(scroll to list of facts below)
Mickey may be my favorite rescue project for two reasons: (1) he reminds me so much of my dog, Cooper, whom I fostered and ultimately adopted in January; and (2) the story behind Mickey's rescue and the origin of his name brings some much-needed humor into an often sad corner of the world known as animal rescue.
Mickey was brought to Limestone County Animal Center as a stray this summer. His shelter name was Shadow. Limestone is one of many shelters I toured this year, and Shadow got my attention quicker than any other dog in the kennels. You could tell he had belonged to someone. The way he leaned his head into my hand when I reached for him through the kennel bars is a moment I won't forget. I knew he meant well. I knew he was a genuinely good dog. And I knew I needed to help him.
Here's the story: Limestone County sends their dogs to Huntsville to be spayed and neutered. I arranged for a very kind couple to pick Shadow up after his neuter surgery and bring him to meet me at the Summit in Birmingham. The husband ended up making the trip alone, and somewhere along the way, he stopped at a McDonald's in Dodge City. He got something to eat for himself and, being the kind soul he is, picked up a little something for Shadow as a road-trip treat.
The trip was going just fine until they got back on the interstate. The husband noticed Shadow circling around in the backseat and became convinced that his freshly neutered passenger was preparing to take a dump in the car. He frantically pulled over on the side of the road and jumped out to let Shadow relieve himself. In his haste, he managed to lock himself out of the car with the keys, Shadow, and the entire bag of McDonald's still inside. Thankfully, the air conditioning was still running, so Shadow was perfectly comfortable while his increasingly less comfortable chauffeur stood on the side of the road waiting for help.
From the comfort of the air-conditioned car, Shadow looked through the window at the man who had just driven to Huntsville to pick him up, and then turned his attention to the unattended McDonald's bag. While his rescuer stood helplessly on the other side of the glass, Shadow ate every single thing in the bag. Not one McNugget was left.
By the time Shadow finally made it to Birmingham, I had already heard the entire story. When I told Mackenzie (my friend and Mickey's foster) what had happened, we agreed that "Shadow" simply wasn't going to cut it anymore. After successfully locking his rescuer out of the car and helping himself to an entire McDonald's meal while the poor man watched helplessly through the window, there was really only one appropriate name for him: Mickey D, or "Mickey" for short.
Mickey is what I call a unicorn dog. He's house trained, wonderful with kids, great with other dogs, walks well on a leash, and has the kind of gentle, easygoing personality that makes you wonder how a dog like him ever ended up in a shelter. If you're looking for a near-perfect dog, please apply to adopt Mickey through my favorite "yes rescue," All The Dogs.
Facts About Mickey
Age: 6.5
Gender: Male
Weight: 55 lbs.
Neutered
Heartworm negative
Vaccinations up to date
House trained!!
Doggy door trained
Great with other dogs
Tested well with cats at the shelter
Happy to sleep on the couch, in a dog bed, or at the foot of the bed (if permitted)
Sleeps quietly through the night
Comfortable being left alone
Calm, quiet, and low-key indoors
Friendly, approachable, and loving
Knows "sit" and "lay down"
Adoption fee sponsored (free to approved applicant)
Location: Birmingham, Alabama
