Michael's Story
Michael is a 3-year-old, neutered, 30 lb Tibetan Terrier who came to us a year ago from our rescue partners in the South. Tragically, his adoptive human passed away, leaving Michael looking for a new forever home. Michael is temporarily being fostered by a neighbor. If he doesn't find a home soon, he will return to the shelter. The posted pictures are a mixture of new and old. He now has a summer cut.

His foster mom sent along a detailed report about all that she's learned about Michael which will be passed along to prospective adopters.

Michael is currently sharing his foster with other dogs and a cat. His foster mom says that the cat and Michael ignore each other.

Michael is very shy, likely rescued from a backyard breeding situation where he did not get the socialization he needed as a puppy. As a result, he needs a quiet and patient home. It took several weeks after his arrival from the South for Michael to feel comfortable enough to be handled by our dog caretaker, Rebecca. Given time, space and love he adjusts.

Due to his shy nature Michael needs a very specific home. An ideal home for Michael would be:

1. A low traffic, adult-only home with another well-socialized dog or two that can help him feel comfortable and safe. Michael has separation anxiety and howls when left alone in the home UNLESS he has the company of other dogs.

2. A home where he is not left alone for long periods of time. He would be a perfect match for an active retiree looking for a smaller dog.

3. A home with a fenced-in yard. Due to his fear of new humans and situations, Michael is a door dasher / flight risk and should go to a home with a physically fenced yard and one that will walk him on leash.

According to his foster family, Michael now knows a few commands. He knows come, sit, and “wait” will get you a sit-stay. If he sees you hold a closed fist, the stay will hold until released by, “let's go.” A continuation of formal training would be a wonderful way to build his confidence and help him bond with his new humans.

Michael is not completely house trained. His foster mom says that he will go to the bathroom when he's leash-walked but will not go in the yard. Frequent walks with praise and rewards for a job well done should help with the training but it's possible that he will never be completely reliable.

Michael is a breed that requires regular grooming (every 6 to 8 weeks). Prospective adopters should be prepared for that expense.

If you are interested in adopting this cutie pie, please bring any resident dogs and all family members to the shelter for a meet and greet.
.
E-mail Charleysstrays@yahoo.com today if interested in adopting this adorable pup!
