Mia's Story

Mia is still waiting... and she deserves a chance 💛🐾

Mia is not “bad.” She is not hopeless. She is a dog who needs structure, routine, boundaries, and someone willing to give her time to feel safe.

Mia is a 6-year-old spayed Terrier mix with a sweet heart and a playful personality. She can be affectionate, silly, food-motivated, and very loving once she trusts you. When Mia gets nervous, excited, or wants to play, she can become mouthy. That means she may use her mouth during interaction instead of understanding right away how to play appropriately with people. She is not trying to be mean — it is more like overstimulated, excited, “I want attention / I want to play” behavior.

The good news is that this behavior has improved a lot. In fact, with her foster, Mia’s mouthiness is now non-existent because she knows the routine, understands what is expected, and feels comfortable. That tells us so much about what Mia needs: consistency, patience, and someone willing to guide her.

Mia also has boundaries that need to be respected. She may not like being picked up by people she does not know, especially men. If she feels scared, trapped, or cornered, we do not recommend picking her up, because she may panic and bite accidentally. Mia needs people who can read dog body language and let her build trust at her own pace.

She also needs safe management around food. Mia is food protective, which means she may growl if someone tries to take food away from her, or if another animal gets too close to her meals, treats, or chews. This is manageable with common-sense boundaries: feed her separately, give her space while eating, and do not try to take food directly from her.

Mia can also get defensive if a much larger dog rushes up to her with too much energy, even if that dog is only trying to say “hi.” In those moments, she may growl or lunge to create space. She is not looking for trouble — she is asking not to be overwhelmed. Mia should avoid dog parks, surprise greetings, and close encounters with unknown high-energy dogs.

What Mia needs:
✅ A patient, dog-experienced adopter
✅ Structure and routine
✅ A calm home without small children
✅ A crate as her safe place
✅ People who respect her boundaries
✅ Food management and separate feeding
✅ No dog parks or surprise dog greetings

Mia is also a total foodie and loves treats — especially dog-safe fruits and veggies like carrots, celery, broccoli, strawberries, pineapple, watermelon, and blueberries. Treats are one of the best ways to build trust with her.

Mia does not need a perfect adopter. She needs a committed one. Someone who understands that rescue dogs sometimes need time to settle, learn, and feel safe. Once Mia is comfortable, she is a great dog — her foster sees it every day.

Mia will do best with an adopter who has prior dog experience, can offer patience and structure, and is willing to let her blossom at her own pace. She does not need a perfect home. She needs a committed one.

If you are the kind of person who believes overlooked dogs deserve a real chance, Mia may be waiting for you.

Fill out an application or message us to set up a meet-and-sniff!
