Mercy's Story

Meet Mercy — and if there was ever a dog who truly lived up to her name, it's her.

Mercy came to us from the hoarding case in Leesville in absolutely heartbreaking condition. When we first got her, she weighed only 50 pounds — skin and bones, starving, missing most of her hair, and you could just see in her eyes that life had not been kind to her. She looked tired, defeated, and forgotten.

Fast forward to today, and Mercy is now 80 pounds of healthy, beautiful, strong German Shepherd — with the most stunning coat and the most gentle, loving eyes you've ever seen. Her transformation has been absolutely incredible, but what makes Mercy truly special isn't how beautiful she is on the outside — it's who she is on the inside.

Mercy has the sweetest soul. She is gentle, loving, and has this way of looking at you that just melts your heart. She loves people, does great with children, and gets along wonderfully with all the other dogs here. In the play yard she runs and plays with everyone and fits right in like she's always belonged.

She is very smart and very food motivated — nothing gets past her nose — and she loves showing off her tricks. Her specialties are sit and shake, especially if snacks are involved. Snack time is definitely one of her favorite activities.

Because Mercy was starved for so long, she can be protective of her food with other dogs only. She may grumble or growl if a dog walks past while she's eating or if she has food in her crate and a dog walks by, but she has never shown any aggression toward people over food. This is very common in dogs who were once starving and had to compete for food, and it's simply her way of saying, “Please don't take my food.” Outside of those situations, she plays and gets along perfectly with all the other dogs.

We do believe Mercy may have been hit in the past because she can be sensitive to fast movement around her face, but she has come such a long way just from being somewhere safe where she knows no one is going to hurt her.

Mercy is a strong girl and can pull on a leash, so she would do best with someone comfortable handling a large dog or willing to continue working with her on leash training. She is very smart and eager to please, so she will continue to learn quickly.

Mercy is spayed, up-to-date on vaccines and preventions, and she has completed heartworm treatment after testing positive when she was rescued. She is now healthy, happy, and ready for her forever home.

Mercy has been through more than most dogs ever should, yet she still loves people, still trusts, and still wants nothing more than to be loved. She will bond deeply with her person and will give someone her whole heart.

She was once starving, hairless, and forgotten... and now she is strong, beautiful, and full of love.
Mercy didn't just survive — she became magnificent. Now she just needs someone to love her forever.
