We don't know where he came from, what his life was like, or what happened to him before he found his way to us.<br/><br/>But we do know that Winston is very, very afraid.<br/><br/>He behaves like a dog who has learned that people aren't always safe. We sincerely hope we're wrong, but his fear is so profound—and he can be so frightened by ordinary movements—that we worry he may have been hit or treated harshly in the past.<br/><br/>We can't know his history.<br/><br/>We can only see the effect it has had on him.<br/><br/>But here's the part that gives us hope:<br/><br/>Winston is slowly coming around.<br/><br/>Little by little, he's beginning to understand that the people around him aren't going to hurt him.
