He has aquired the name "kool-aid man" for his misunderstanding of his size and barreling through things (he is learning, however). On the other hand, he is very agile and profoundly mature when it comes to protecting his yard from a potential threat. True to his breed, Maxwell is a very strong, independent, and giant sized dog with a 1.5yrs to grow as of the end of August. He will get much bigger, much stronger, and much more independent, and therefore needs an experienced owner who understands the breed and can handle his strength. <br/><br/>Maxwell has a very derpy, dorky side to him, acting silly and looking cute. He is a decent learner and loves praise, but he does have the typical breed's bullheaded streak. Also true to the breed, his coat is very thick and his mane is difficult to keep clean, for just like every young boy he likes to wrestle with his besties and play in the dirt. To boot, he's a big slobbery boy with drool for days. So it's important to keep in mind that he will need regular grooming, and his drooling ways will need to be accepted and appreciated (on you, in his water, the wall, etc.). <br/><br/>Our boy is a lot of fun to be around and will make you laugh, but he is indeed a guardian breed. Socialization is important and keeping him behind a solid 5-6ft fence is a must - no exceptions. He can also NEVER be let off leash, not even for a 5ft walk to the car when not in a fenced area, for he will BOLT. This is a BREED TRAIT and CANNOT be trained out of them. He does well on a leash, but may need a second to get adjusted. We're working on this and he's doing just fine. <br/><br/>Maxwell has a dominant streak with dogs, despite really loving them and being lonely without them. So he will only be homed with females or medium/small male dogs. His best friend is currently Butternut, and they play and play and play! He does have a 13lb foster sibling and does fine with her. He will challenge a large/giant male dog. <br/><br/>**One important thing to recognize is that despite being 109lbs, Maxwell is STILL a puppy and still acts very puppy. Therefore training will need to continue for manners, chewing, etc. He does chew his beds and other fun things that he can rip apart, so alternative toys are a important.<br/><br/>Maxwell is charming, affectionate, loving, and happy, yet also a teenager. So when considering him as a part of your family, it's important to consider all of his wonderful traits, his breed, and his puppyhood.
