In just seven short weeks, Max has transformed from a terrified dog who wouldn't leave his crate, to a happy, playful, affectionate little guy who wants to be around his people. We couldn't be prouder of the progress he's made! Max is an Australian Cattle Dog mix who is estimated to be between 2-3 years old. His looks, pocket Heeler size, and clownish personality suggest he could be part Jack Russell Terrier. But that's a guess - he was brought to the shelter as a stray, so we don't know his history or his parentage. Max loves to be outside and is shaping up to be a great little trail buddy! At 30 lbs, he is super portable and easily lifted over rough scrambles. When we meet other hikers on the trail, Max is shy but not reactive. When we are out walking around the neighborhood and stop to chat with neighbors, Max waits politely, but does not engage with people beyond a quick sniff. That's ok - every quick sniff is a milestone to be celebrated for this little hermit crab, and celebrate we do! Max recently stayed with our dogsitter, and he did great! He warmed to her quickly and was playing within hours. Speaking of playing, Max loves toys - all kinds of toys - and will happily amuse himself by emptying the toy basket and playing with each one in turn. <br/><br/>He is a medium energy boy, and settles quietly in his crate. Although he is still nervous about getting in the car, he rides without fuss, and when its time to go home again, he jumps in the car on his own. Max really enjoys the company of other dogs, and would love a balanced, playful canine companion to show him the ropes and help him build trust. He would also do fine as an only dog. His multi-dog foster home can feel a little overwhelming to him at times, but he has displayed no resource guarding towards the resident dogs or people. He has not been exposed to cats in his foster home, but its likely that his prey drive would get him in trouble with kitties. Max would not thrive in a busy, chaotic household. He needs calm, routine, and structure in an adult-only home. Max is still a skittish boy, but he has come so far and so fast, we know that with more time and gentle socialization, he's going to be an amazing dog. We also know that Max's above-and-beyond potential is going to require an above-and-beyond adopter, one who is willing to slowly build love and trust over time. He does seem to be slightly more nervous with men than women. Were going to be very careful about rightness of fit. <br/><br/>He's ready to show you he's worth it! Max is neutered, microchipped, and up to date on vaccines and preventatives.
