Max's Story

Meet Max!

(This is a courtesy listing for a local dog in need of a new home. Great dog, well loved! Please apply at www.adoptapal.org/adopt in order to meet him )

Age: 8 years old
Breed: Heeler Mix, approximately 65lbs
Health: Neutered, fully recovered from double ACL surgery, microchipped, up-to-date on care

Good with: Dogs (Ignores neighborhood cats but doesnt live with cats. Think he would be fine.)

Kids: has been great with respectful kids who know how to politely interact with dogs

Ideal Home: Work-from-home, hybrid, or retired household

About Max:
Max is a gentle, deeply loyal, and incredibly affectionate 8-year-old soul who wants nothing more than to be your steady companion. He is a total lovebug who thrives on human connection and will gladly snuggle up next to you on the couch for quiet companionship.

Maxs journey shows just how resilient he is: two years ago, he successfully underwent double ACL surgery and aced his 12-week recovery. Today, he is fully healed, mobile, and does fantastic! He has no behavioral issues, is completely house-trained, and is a wonderfully mannered gentleman in the home.

His Ideal Home & Emotional Needs:
Max is a true "velveteen dog" whose primary motivation in life is simply being near his person. Because of his past transitions, Max experiences severe separation anxiety and needs a home that aligns with his emotional needs:

Daily Routine:
Max thrives best with someone who works from home full-time, is retired, or has a household where someone is present most of the day.

Free-Roam Environment:
Max cannot be kenneled (crate confinement heightens his anxiety). He does wonderfully free-roaming and never gets into any trouble when left alone.

Managing Anxiety:
To keep him comfortable, he receives a calming treat about 30 minutes before his human leaves for more than an hour.

Lick Granuloma Care:
When Max feels anxious, he tends to self-soothe by licking his front right leg, which has created a chronic lick granuloma. He has previously been prescribed Fluoxetine (Prozac) by a veterinarian, which was very effective at keeping his anxiety and licking in check if his new family chooses to continue prescription management.

Compatibility:

Other Dogs: Max does great with other dogs and benefits from having a calm canine companion to help him feel secure.

Cats: He has not been tested around cats.

Summary:
Max is a resilient, deeply loving dog who has overcome a lot and just wants a peaceful, predictable home to spend his golden years. If you are looking for a loyal shadow, a dedicated cuddle buddy, and have a home where he won't have to spend long stretches alone, Max will give you all the love in the world in return.
