Maverick's Story
Maverick is the definition of a “perfectly imperfect” dog — 98% sweetheart, 2% “I panicked for a second, sorry!” He’s a big, goofy, lovable boy who has come such a long way thanks to patient, consistent structure in his foster home. Most days, he is an absolute joy: he does his adorable “hippo dance,” loves going on adventures, seeks affection, and tries so hard to be the good boy he truly is.

But Maverick didn’t get the guidance he needed early in life, and it shows in moments of stress or surprise. When startled, he may react — not out of aggression, but out of fear and a lack of early social learning. With the right person, he continues making progress every day. He just needs time, structure, and thoughtful management as he settles into a new home.

Maverick Thrives With:

A calm, dog-savvy adult home

Someone who understands startle responses and can continue the training he’s worked so hard on

Predictable routines and clear communication

A person comfortable giving fair boundaries and corrections — he thrives on structure, not endless treats

A home that won’t overwhelm him with constant new people, places, or chaotic environments

Home Compatibility:

🚫 No kids
🐶 Prefers one calm dog or to be the only dog — he can coexist with some dogs, but playtime must be structured
🐱 Cats unknown
🐐 No issues around goats or horses (he follows an “off-limits” rule)
🚗 LOVES car rides — would ride all day if you let him

Maverick would make an amazing partner for an active, experienced owner — someone who enjoys training, hiking, a structured lifestyle, and wants a dog who bonds deeply with “their” person. He is loyal, goofy, grateful, and incredibly loving once he trusts you.

Maverick didn’t fail anyone — humans failed him early on, and he’s simply looking for the first person who won’t.

If you’re confident, experienced, and love the process of helping a dog blossom into their best self, Maverick may very well be your heart dog. He’s UTD on vaccines and prevention and is ready to start his next adventure with the person who truly gets him.

Maverick, a handsome and well-trained 3-year-old Doberman, is available for adoption through Dogwood Doberman Rescue. His perfect match is out there — maybe it’s you. ❤️🐾
