Martha's Story

Meet Martha – A Brave Survivor Ready for a Forever Home ??

Hello world, my name is Martha, a purebred Rottweiler who arrived at the West Memphis Animal Shelter on February 10, 2025. When I came in, I was in heartbreaking condition—emaciated, suffering from two cherry eyes, heartworm positive, and very pregnant. I truly was a medical mess and needed so much help.

Just two days later, at the veterinarian’s office, I went into labor and delivered six puppies—four survived and were adopted into loving homes, while two precious little ones sadly didn’t make it. After my babies were safe, I stayed under veterinary care to heal and begin my own journey to recovery.

I was spayed, completed my full heartworm treatment, gained weight, and transformed from a 58-lb starving girl into a healthy, strong, 90-lb beauty. Along the way, my caregivers also discovered that my kidneys don’t function properly, so I will need to remain on a special kidney diet (Science Diet) for life. Because of this, I will need a committed and responsible family who understands that my medical care is part of loving me.

Despite everything I’ve been through, I am incredibly sweet, gentle, and loving. The veterinary staff absolutely adores me, and I adore them right back. I’ve lived with other dogs and did well with them. I’m not sure how I feel about cats, but I’m a friendly girl with a big heart and so much love to give.

I’ve overcome every challenge life has thrown at me. Now I’m just hoping someone sees my worth and gives me the home I truly deserve—a home full of love, care, and kindness.

If you’re looking for a strong, loyal, affectionate girl with a survivor’s spirit, I’m your girl.

Due to Arkansas State's Spay Neuter Law, we do not perform same day adoption; unless the animal in particular has already been altered; rather an application to adopt must be filled out and then left at the front desk or by website, www.westmemphisanimalshelter.com Once a completed application has been received and an animal has been chosen, the application is reviewed by the adoption advisor and the process could take 24-48 hrs before you are contacted, please be patient. Veterinary references are most helpful if you currently have a pet in the home or have owned one in the past, sterilization of animals already in the home are mandatory, a fence/property check must be completed , if renting, landlord will be notified so we will need a contact number to verify applicant indeed can adopt said animal. All animals adopted from the West Memphis Animal Shelter must be sterilized according to Arkansas State Law.
