Sometimes that’s just how the journey goes, & it’s all a normal part of the decompression process for a former commercial breeder mama learning to navigate her new world. Last night, we had family over for dinner. Maple spent the entire evening quietly resting in her favorite spot on the dog bed in the living room. She allowed everyone to come over, visit & gently pet her. While she was incredibly brave, we could tell she was nervous. One of Maple’s little telltale signs of stress is licking her lips. She was doing her best, but it was a lot for our sweet girl. Once everyone left, we enjoyed some quiet time before heading to bed. But bedtime looked a little different. Instead of sleeping next to our daughter on the floor, Maple found her way underneath the bed. And when morning came, she wasn’t quite ready to come out. So we let her be. No coaxing, no pressure, no rushing. Just giving her the space & time she needed to feel safe again. About an hour later, we heard the familiar pitter-patter of little corgi feet across the floor. Our girl had decided she was ready! She headed outside to potty, enjoyed her breakfast & then rejoined the family in the living room, settling right back into her favorite dog bed. Here’s the thing about decompression: Progress isn’t always a straight line. Maple continues to make progress every single day, but we’re also learning what situations can overwhelm her. So far, we’ve noticed two big triggers: our resident dogs getting loud and excited when we come home & a busy evening with visitors. Maple handled last night’s gathering beautifully, but afterwa

10/8/26-Maple Mae McShortlegs Pupdate! Our sweet little Maple is slowly but surely coming out of her shell! With each passing day, she’s becoming a little more comfortable, a little more relaxed, and a little more confident in her new surroundings. Playtime! Maple has started playing with toys in short little bursts! It’s adorable watching her discover the joy of being a dog. Although, sometimes she surprises herself when she accidentally makes a toy squeak! Lol She’s still decompressing and can be easily startled by loud noises or sudden movements. We’re giving her all the time, patience, and reassurance she needs to feel safe. Mealtime! We noticed Maple was picking through her food, favoring the softer pieces and leaving behind the harder kibble. We started adding a little water to soften everything up, and what a difference! She’s eating much better now! Cheese Snacks! Maple absolutely loves cheese snacks! The moment she hears the cheese drawer open in the fridge, she comes running with the rest of the pack. It’s adorable watching her join in on the excitement—and clearly, she knows exactly where the good treats are! Lol Housebreaking! We’re making great progress! On mild days, we’ve been propping the door open so Maple has easy access to the backyard whenever she needs it. She generally goes potty 3–5 times a day, and we’re happy to report NO accidents since finishing her post-surgery antibiotics! That’s a big win for Miss Maple! Our Next Mission: Stairs! We’re going to start working on navigating a flight of stairs, both up AND down. One little paw at a time! Maple is still learning what it means to be a loved family dog. Things that seem so ordinary to us—playing with toys, enjoying meals, exploring the house, and simply relaxing—are all part of a whole new world for her. We’re celebrating every tiny milestone because, for a girl like Maple, those little victories are actually HUGE! Keep cheering for our brave little Miss McShortlegs! Her journey is just beginning.

9/30/26-MAPLE MILESTONE! However brief... IT STILL HAPPENED! For the first time, Maple Mae McShortlegs began to PLAY! It may have only lasted a few moments, but for a scared, shutdown retired mill mama who is still learning what it means to feel safe, those few moments are HUGE. For just a little while, Maple forgot to be scared. She let her guard down. She got a little silly. And she played.
Every tiny first is another glimpse of the dog Maple is becoming now that she has the freedom to simply be a dog. Today it was only a few seconds. Next time, maybe a little longer. Keep going, Maple Mae. Your happy is starting to show.

9/27/26-It’s Coronation Day! Her Royal Highness Maple Mae McShortlegs was such a good sport today as she officially took her crown. From a scared little girl tucked away in her corner to this crowned Corgi queen—Maple is getting braver every day and learning that being part of a family comes with love, snuggles... and the occasional royal accessory. Lol All hail Queen Maple Mae McShortlegs! We have determined Maple will only be adopted to a home with kids as that makes her the happiest. She is showing signs of a urinary tract infection so Maple is starting on antibiotics to clear that up too.

9/24/26-Guess who rolled over for BELLY RUBS?!? That’s right... MAPLE! And the best part? They were for FOSTER DAD! The same big guy she’s been a little unsure of — and may have been holding a tiny grudge against for taking her to and from the vet — got the ultimate sign of approval today: the belly! Lol
For a retired breeder mama who is still learning that people can be kind, hands can be gentle, and a home can be safe, this is HUGE progress. Every tiny step is a big victory for Maple. Keep being brave, sweet girl. You’re doing amazing.

9/23/26-Sunday night, Maple spent the night sleeping next to her favorite person, our daughter. She slept on the floor beside Maple to help her feel safe, comfortable, and relaxed. There’s already something very special about the bond between these two. Monday morning, Maple was spayed, and when she came home Tuesday afternoon, she was understandably uncomfortable and a little restless. She didn’t want to settle inside and preferred spending time out in the yard. She’s still figuring out this whole “living in a house with a family” thing—and, most importantly, her favorite person was still at school! Later that afternoon, Maple was VERY happy to see our daughter get off the big yellow school bus. She also got to meet another 10-year-old child. Maple walked right up to both girls and happily let them pet her. One thing is becoming very clear: Maple loves kids. She didn’t eat much dinner Tuesday night, but she did take her medicine in a pill pocket like a good girl. Then came another BIG milestone. Late Tuesday night, Maple approached me—foster mom—for the very first time and allowed me to pet her. And she didn’t just do it once. She came back several times! For a scared little girl who has been through so much and is still learning that people can be trusted, that felt huge. Foster dad is home with Maple during the day, and we know she’ll warm up to him eventually. For now, however, he’s still the big guy who took her to the vet and brought her home after her spay. Lol Maple may be holding just a tiny grudge. We’re confident that, with time, she’ll let down her guard and realize he’s one of the good guys too. Our daughter slept on the floor with Maple again Tuesday night, and this morning she reported something pretty amazing: Maple let her rub her belly! Today, Maple still isn’t eating much, although she is taking her medicine. After our daughter left for school, she began pacing through the house and only settling for short periods. We suspect she’s wondering where her little person went and when that big yellow bus is going to bring her back. But there’s something really encouraging hidden in all that pacing. When Maple does settle down, she now chooses to rest in the living room with the family instead of hiding in a corner. Maple is still uncomfortable from her surgery. She still hasn’t completely settled into her new surroundings, and she’s still learning that she can trust us. But when we look at where this frightened little girl was just a few days ago compared with where she is today, the progress is incredible. She’s leaving her corner. She’s seeking out affection. She’s choosing to be near the family. She’s learning what it feels like to be safe. And she has already decided that our daughter is her person. One tiny, brave step at a time, Miss Maple. You’re doing so well. And by this afternoon? Maple finally settled down, stretched out in the living room, and took a 10-minute nap! It might not sound like much, but for a little girl who has spent her life in a puppy mill, feeling safe enough to relax and close her eyes in a new home is HUGE progress. We are so proud of you, Maple! You don’t have to be brave all at once. We’ll be right here, cheering you on, one tiny step at a time.

9/19/26-Introducing Maple Mae McShortlegs
Our newest foster is a 3-year-old corgi who arrived today, thanks to an amazing group of dedicated volunteers! Sweet Maple is still settling in. She’s quiet, a little scared, and trying to make sense of her new surroundings. But she’s already made a new friend in our 10 year old daughter! What Maple doesn’t know yet is that the best chapter of her life is just beginning. Welcome to freedom, the warmth of a family, and a whole lot of love, little Miss McShortlegs! You’re safe now, sweet girl.
Maple is being spayed on Monday and will be available for adoption soon.

09/18/26-Maple Mae McShortlegs is a beautiful 3 year old female Pembroke Welsh Corgi.
