Maisie's Story
MAISIE is a 6 year old spayed female DNA-tested Golden Retriever/Border Collie/Irish Setter mix. She entered our foster care program from an all-breed shelter during the first days of the Illinois COVID19 Shelter-in-Place order when her health was at risk. She received much needed veterinary care and recovered quickly.

Maisie is housetrained, crate-trained and walks reasonably well on leash with a prong collar or a harness.

Maisie’s personality is true to her Golden Retriever/Border Collie heritage. She is very smart, food motivated, has a high prey drive and needs to have a job to occupy her both physically and mentally. She needs a home with a 6' fenced yard, but, she also needs to be actively engaged in play in that yard. She loves balls and other toys and will play retrieve games for long periods of time.

She was reticent at first to allow cuddling by her foster parents but now she eagerly climbs up beside them on the sofa for snuggling, but always on her own terms. She recently met a new person on one of her walks and when that person sat down on the ground to meet her, Maisie stepped right into her lap for attention and gave kisses.

Maisie had lived in a home/backyard with a male dog, but had very little experience in the real world or with other dogs. Our society changes this spring and summer have allowed Maisie the time she needed to feel more comfortable in a home and begin to diminish her fear of other dogs. With her foster mom, she participated in an online class for reactive dogs and learned some control of her reactive behavior. However, this training will need to continue throughout her life. She has been walked on-leash with other dogs in her foster home. Some dogs she ignores and others she reacts to negatively. At this time, she has not attended any in-person obedience classes with other dogs and that would be the next step in her training.

Maisie was originally relinquished because the crying of a new baby in her previous home made her anxious. She will need an all-adult home, preferably as an only dog and with no cats or other small pets. A home with a fenced yard would allow her to play and be trained safely but should not be used as her only exercise outlet. She is not and will probably never be a dog who can go to a dog park or a daycare.

Maisie’s confidence and reaction to other dogs has improved greatly during her time in foster care. She deserves a home with a dog-knowledgeable person who can help her reach her full potential. Her adoption fee is $350.

If you are interested in learning more about Maisie, please contact Gordon Highlander Rescue Program through this Petfinder post or at khubbard@niu.edu . She is available for adoption within driving distance of northern Illinois.
