Maggie's Story

Bio: Meet Maggie! The sweetest, squishiest, least photogenic, but loviest dog Pink Heart Rescue has ever had! Maggie came to us from Indianapolis Care and Control after being surrendered to them by her owners. All we know is the owners bred her at least once and decided to surrender her because she started to have seizures. Because of this we have had her with us since December to observe her for seizure activity and while she has been with us we have not observed a single seizure. She has also been to the vet to be assessed for seizures and to have her eyes looked at. As far as the vet can tell besides the fact that Shar Peis can be known for seizures she has no reason to think she is currently experiencing them. As far as her blindness goes the vet suspects that it has been caused by entropion. Entropion is another common condition in Shar Peis where their eye wrinkles cause their eyelashes and fur to rub on the eyeball causing lacerations and scarring which can lead to permanent blindness. This can be prevented by having their eyes tacked but it looks like Maggie's eyes were tacked after the damage had been done. The good news is her eye pressure is normal and her eyes seem to not be causing her pain so most likely she will be able to keep her eyes. Whoever adopts Maggie will need to understand the Shar Pei breed's different possible health conditions and be in the emotional and financial position to take care of her since in future seizures could arise or her eyes could need to be removed, although right now there is no reason to suspect that. Despite her past health issues Maggie is the most friendly, happy-go-lucky dog I have ever had the pleasure to meet. She doesn't meet a person, dog, or cat she doesn't love. All she wants is love, attention and snacks! Maggie loves to play, snuggle! She does have some difficulty walking on leash since she is blind and easily gets tangled so she would love a low key family that had at least a small fenced in yard for her to roam around in. She is also not great on stairs and would need a family who would patiently help her adjust to stairs and be okay with using baby gates, or better yet a home with no stairs! While Maggie does need a patient home to help her adjust she will make it up to you 10 fold in the amount of love she will shower you. She has been one of the biggest joys to have at our rescue and if I had more individual time to devote to her she would absolutely not be leaving. If it weren't for her disabilities I would say she's a darn near perfect dog. Whoever adopts her will be a very lucky family. Breed experience would be great but isn't necessary. The most important thing is that you have a heart big enough to match hers! If you think Maggie would be a good fit for your family please email us at pinkheartrescue@gmail.com

Our Mission
