Lummox's Story

Lummox is a friendly, sweet greyhound who is just happy to be your best friend! He would do best in a home where his people (or person) are home most of the time. He enjoys spending time with his family and foster galgo brother. Lummox loves to be near his family and friends and will relax on the couch with you for hours.

In his foster home, Lummox has shown some anxiety when left home by himself for more than 4-6 hours at a time. He would be best suited to a family that is home most of the time with him and does not need to spend full days in the office. Although he does fine in short bursts, he becomes stressed when left alone for 8+ hours daily.

Lummox has a high prey drive and would do best in a home without small dogs or cats. He walks well on a leash, but occasionally pulls when he catches sight of a squirrel or a stray cat. He can usually be deterred from the hunt by a firm no, and then going the other way.

In public, "Lummy" is the star of the show! He has no fear of strangers and loves to receive pets and attention from all people. He might even bestow a kiss or two!

If you are looking for a laid-back companion to spend your days with, Lummox is the dog for you!

Would this sweet boy make a good addition to your family? American Greyhound's Adoption Policy
There are so many hounds in need of loving homes, and we are excited that you are considering adopting one of these great dogs! We look forward to helping you find the best dog for your family. To get started, please review the adoption resources on our website and then visit our adoption application page to submit your information. * * * * * Adoption Information We primarily adopt across the Midwest, including Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, Michigan, Kentucky, and Missouri. In special cases, transportation can be arranged outside of our usual area. Adoption fees include spay/neuter, dental (if needed), vaccinations, and routine exam/testing. All dogs also come with a martingale collar, safety harness, and leash. Because every dog is living in a foster home, we gradually learn more about them the longer they are with us. They have new experiences, like meeting big or small dogs, living with additional pets, or spending time with children. They also begin to acclimate to living in a home, including learning house manners and developing a routine. We try to update profiles as we learn new information, but if you have questions about a specific dog, please ask! * * * * * Application Process Your application will be delivered to our volunteer Adoption Coordinators, who will typically contact you within a few days. Your adoption coordinator will set up a time to speak with you about your interest in adopting a sighthound and discuss which dogs may be a good match. We'll also contact your references. When determining if a dog would be a good fit, we help you take into consideration factors like other pets, children in the home, household activity level, and more. Our goal is to find a match that is ideal not just for you and your family, but for the dog as well. We will help coordinate the pick-up/drop-off of your new family member with you and the hound’s foster family or one of our transport volunteers. Your adoption coordinator will also let you know when the adoption fee should be paid. Adoption fees vary by hound and can be found on each dog’s individual profile. * * * * * “Cat-Tolerable” Hounds Due to the importance of finding a safe match for homes with feline residents, we ask for your understanding in giving priority to those with cats living in the home when “cat-tolerant” hounds are available. Potential adopters who do not have cats should choose from the “not cat-tolerant” hounds whenever possible, so that households with cats are able to adopt hounds, too. (For more information on cat introductions and sighthounds’ compatibility with cats, please visit our website.) Please be aware that even if a dog is "cat-safe", they may not get along with a specific cat, so we advise slow and careful introductions for every dog. * * * * * Return Policy If a particular hound is not working out in your home for any reason, such as conflicts with other pets, children, etc., American Greyhound will always take the dog back and will find another home that is a better match. Remember that every hound has been welcomed into the hearts and home of his or her foster family once already, and our volunteers will gladly welcome them again. Please note, it is required that any dog adopted from American Greyhound be returned to our organization if they cannot stay in their adoptive home, regardless of the reason for return. * * * * * We look forward to helping you find your new best friend!
