LUKE's Story

Luke was born on St. Croix in the US Virgin Islands where he was found along with his Mama and brother in the rainforest struggling to survive. Luke came into rescue care on St. Croix when he was 3 months old. Sadly, on St. Croix, when dogs have any health issues, many "owners" dump them in the jungle, basically leaving them for dead instead of treating their health needs. Luke is one of the lucky ones that was found before he met this terrible fate.

He has been in foster care on St. Croix with an amazing foster family since late January 2026. Luke started out as almost a feral puppy, but blossomed into a wonderfully loving, snuggly, happy go lucky bundle of joy 10 month old pup! Luke has some scars from his former days as a feral uncared for dog, (more on this below and as shown on the picture of his first day of rescue), but he will make a handsome addition to a loving family of any make up. He loves kids, adults, dogs, and even does not mind coexisting with cats!

Luke is calm, quiet, loves stuffies and playing with other dogs that are on his same level of gentle energy. He would really LOVE a playful sibling in his forever home! He also really loves those little cat toys with the bell inside the plastic ball.
He has really come out of his shell and though a little timid from time to time, he is cautiously social in most settings. He really wants to be a social butterfly! He likes meeting new people and being part of the group. He is crate trained, house trained, knows "sit" and has learned that people aren’t so bad especially when they feed him yummy food! Most importantly, Luke doesn’t have a mean bone in his body.

Luke would do best in a home so long as his people and other fur buddies allow him to adjust at his speed. Especially after a long trip to his forever home from the Carribean! He WILL need time to get comfortable and learn his new surroundings and love his forever people. While he is becoming a curious social butterfly, he would also be perfectly happy being a home-body. He would be ok as an only child, but would love doggie siblings that can respect his gently quiet nature and are not too in his face, at least at the beginning.

Luke's favorite things: Long walks, hiking, car rides, playing with other doggie friends, snuggling with his humans, exploring and well, basically he just loves life and wants a permanent home and people to love him so he can continue all these things!

Luke's health: Luke came into island rescue care with several skin infections of unknown origin. He had a bacterial infection, demodectic mange, a fungal infection and numerous cuts and scrapes. Medicines have treated and cured the mange and infections but in this process he lost a bunch of fur and some of it has not grown back and it is uncertain if it ever will. Luke still thinks he is handsome and his St. Croix fosters do too! To figure out why he had such hair loss, he has had some blood tests and biopsies and he was found to have a condition called cutaneous vasculitis. It is possible that this condition was brought on by a flea/sand flea infection called Bartonella. He is nearing the end of treatment for the bartonella and he may be rid of both conditions, but only time will tell. If he continues to have cutaneous vasculitis, he may end up on daily low dose prednisone. Luke's condition makes him a little itchy, and he has the hair loss, but that's the long and the short of his symptoms. He is otherwise very healthy, happy and really unaware of any of the underlying diagnoses. He is expected to live a long healthy life given the mild nature of all his diagnoses. He does not need any further testing or treatments and just needs some maintenance meds and lots of love and snuggles.

We have a fantastic team of rescuers that will help transport sweet Luke to a family in Vermont/New Hampshire, we just need to find that special family for him! Could it be you, a family member or a friend?
