Lucy's Story
Lucy Goosey is a very silly goose. She is about 30 pounds of comedy. But she has stage fright, so only those she trusts get to experience her true nature. Lucy came from one of the most tragic backgrounds imaginable, so it’s no wonder she has trust issues. But through a lot of patience and care, Lucy has overcome a great deal in her short life and is ready for a home of her own. Lucy’s foster mom is a dog trainer, she and Lucy have been working hard to help Lucy overcome her fears. She’s made a lot of progress, but Lucy is still slow to warm up and she takes Prozac every day. Of course treats help immensely when trying to make new friends! Lucy does much better when she has the freedom and space to approach a new person on her terms instead of someone coming at her, I mean a girl has to have her boundaries respected after all. Because of her tendency to react with fear and defensiveness around unexpected noises or movements, we recommend a home without small children. Lucy is trained in a variety of basic commands and her foster mom is happy to review that training with her new family.

Lucy is extremely athletic and would make the perfect agility or lure coursing dog if she could overcome her fear of strangers and new environments. But she’s happy to perform these skills in the quiet of her own backyard without the pressure of an audience. Lucy’s dream home would be with someone patient as she takes time to warm up, someone kind as she is very sensitive to corrections, someone who is understanding when she responds to fear with defensive barks, someone who is a clear leader when she’s uncertain, someone affectionate as she loves to give kisses when she feels safe, someone who wants to play play play and walk or run to get her wiggles out.

When it comes to other dogs, Lucy can be selective; she absolutely loves to play with her trusted dog friends, and she can make new friends but it’s difficult for her. She’s always concerned with safety first, so she’s on edge and can be defensive until she knows she can trust the other dog. Lucy does best with dogs that will ignore her and give her space at first, or dogs that will listen to her boundaries. She doesn’t appreciate dogs that growl play. She is a strange mix of submissive but defensive - she doesn’t want to lead the pack, but she won’t let herself get pushed around and has to learn to trust the one who is the alpha. Lucy needs a home with someone who understands dog behavior and is willing to show her a lot of patience - if she has that, she’ll thrive and be a super fun higher energy companion.

Lucy’s birthday is approximately July 2021. She is crate trained and house trained, but due to her rough start in life, she will pee in her crate and shred blankets if left for more than about 8 hours. She does ask to go outside when loose in the house, but if you miss her requests she will have an accident. Pads are not a good option because she likes to play with and shred them. We recommend a doggy door for that reason, but it’s not entirely necessary.
