She was rescued from a situation where her original owner abandoned her to someone else, and she was unfortunately confined to a small space for much of the last year until ABR brought her into rescue. She also had a litter of puppies prior to being spayed.<br/><br/>Because of her past experiences, Lucy is exceptionally sensitive to correction. Brittanys are known for being sensitive dogs, and Lucys history has amplified that trait. A firm no is all that is ever needed, and anything more can be upsetting for her. She can become nervous in unfamiliar situations, though a soothing voice and gentle scratches behind her ears quickly help her relax. Once she feels comfortable, she loves affection and will happily rest her head on your leg for as long as you will let her.<br/><br/>Lucy has made tremendous progress in foster care and continues to learn quickly. She is doing very well with her indoor manners and has not had a single accident in the house since arriving. She sleeps soundly each night in a puffy bed inside her crate and is very comfortable with crate training. Early on, she struggled with jumping on people and counter surfing, but consistent daily training has reduced both behaviors by 90%. She is a smart dog who responds well to positive reinforcement and is eager to learn.<br/><br/>Lucy enjoys spending time outdoors. She walks well on a leash, though she loves to stretch out and investigate every interesting smell along the way. Off leash, she enjoys running, exploring, and playing with her foster canine siblings in their five-acre yard. She comes when called and is currently learning basic commands including sit, come, down, and stay.<br/><br/>She does well with children, though she would likely thrive in a home with older children or adults only while she continues to build confidence. Lucy also gets along well with other animals. She does not chase cats and has shown little interest in livestock, including sheep, cows, and chickens!<br/><br/>Lucys future family will need patience, understanding, and a commitment to continuing the positive training foundation she has already built. Giving her time to adjust, offering gentle guidance, and respecting her sensitive nature will help her settle in and flourish. In return, Lucy is a loving, loyal companion who simply wants to be loved. She has many wonderful years ahead of her and will make an exceptional addition to the right family.
