Louie's Story
Apply to Adopt Me!
Meet Louie, a 13 to 15-year-old, 11-pound Chihuahua with a sweet, independent personality. Louie may be a senior, but he still has some spunk! One of his favorite things is heading outside to do his “happy laps” around the yard, and he’ll often get bursts of happy energy after a good meal or nap. Little by little, Louie has come out of his shell and is constantly surprising his current foster. Previously thought to not be interested in toys, he recently started showing interest! He may not be interested in playing with other dogs, but Louie absolutely knows how to enjoy himself and brings a quiet joy to the home.

A Note from Louie’s Foster:

"When Louie first came into rescue after losing the only home he’d known, he was understandably shut down and heartbroken. But over the past several weeks, I’ve watched him slowly come out of his shell in the sweetest ways. I call him my “little onion,” because every layer that peels back reveals even more personality, happiness, and spunk.

Watching Louie transform has been such a joy. From running happy laps around the backyard for no reason at all, to discovering toys, to enjoying little walks on a leash, he continues to surprise me all the time. He may be a senior, but his resilience has honestly blown me away.

Louie is truly one of the easiest fosters I’ve had. He just wants a peaceful home where he can relax, wander the yard, follow his person around, and feel safe and loved again. Whoever adopts him is going to get a very special little dog."

Louie likes being near his people and part of your day, but he’s not overly demanding or clingy. He’s more of a calm companion than a lap dog—happy to nap nearby, wander the yard, or quietly keep you company. He gets along with respectful dogs who allow him his space and would do best in a peaceful, low-key home environment. He doesn't love being alone for long periods of time, but does well on his own for a few hours. We don't believe Louie is used to going on regular walks, but he does well on a leash and has really seemed to enjoy the occasional short walk with his foster mom. That said, he’s perfectly content getting his exercise and outdoor time by leisurely sniffing and exploring the yard, so daily walks don’t seem necessary for him to be happy. Louie really enjoys spending time outside and would love a home with a secure yard where he can comfortably wander, explore, and do his beloved laps.

Louie has stage 2 kidney disease, which is currently very manageable with his prescription kidney diet and regular potty breaks. Because of this, staying hydrated is important, and Louie does a great job with this! Regular potty breaks help him feel his best. Louie is mostly housebroken and has been doing very well settling into a routine. He much prefers going outside and genuinely does his best to wait, but his water intake can make that tough sometimes. Any accidents are definitely more medical than behavioral. The only occasional accidents he’s had with his current foster have happened when no one was home to let him out in time. Otherwise, Louie handles his business in the yard like a pro and seems quite proud of himself when he does.

Louie has been great about sleeping through the night, but will occasionally need a middle-of-the-night potty break. He will hop out into the yard for a potty break, and then run back inside and right back to bed, where he usually sleeps until his foster mom is up.

Car rides make Louie nervous, and he can be vocal while traveling. He would be much happier relaxing at home than tagging along for road trips. Outside of the car, he is a very easygoing little guy. He has a good appetite, loves chicken treats, and is simply a joyful little pup.

Louie came to Lil Rascals Rescue when his owners were moved to a long-term care facility. He has diminished vision (mostly outside in bright light), but he gets around very well and can definitely still see—well enough to chase a small lizard! His hearing is fading, though he recognizes certain familiar sounds, especially anything involving the backyard door opening. He appears to have had dental work not too long ago, and it was discovered that he has an oronasal fistula. It does not seem to cause him any discomfort and he currently has no symptoms, but he will need to remain on a soft diet. Due to his age, Lil Rascals has decided not to put him through surgery for the fistula.

Louie is looking for a comfortable, quiet, all-adult home where he can enjoy his golden years with people who appreciate a sweet senior dog with an independent spirit and a surprisingly playful side.
