Lorelei's Story

Lorelei was surrendered to a high kill shelter with her sisters, Briar and Treason. In Southern California there is such an over abundance of dogs that some shelters only accept owner surrender dogs if there is a reason that determines that they are a "risk to society" in some way. So at just 6 months old these 3 girls were brought to the shelter emaciated and terrified. Their owner claimed that they "killed a neighborhood cat" of which he claimed there was proof. The only "proof" was that unfortunately a cat had been killed in their neighborhood, but there was no reason or indication that the girls were involved at all. Unfortunately this is quite common in high kill shelter areas, people surrender their dogs and claim that they are strays that they found or say they have a bite history even if they do not. This is so unfortunate because the dogs are prioritized for euthanasia based on what the previous owner or surrendering person says. The girls came very close to being euthanized before we rescued them. My boarder in CA decided to cat test them at her facility and the girls were ambivalent and even fearful when she showed them some kittens. The girls have spent the first half of their life fearful and hungry and in the shelter where they spent the other half of their puppy months the fear and food insecurity only worsened. <br/>The girls have been with us about a week now and everyday they get a little more confident, curious and playful. Lorelei is the most affectionate of the girls. Since she has been with us Lorelei seems to be so happy and grateful. When I come down stairs in the morning she has the cutest sheepish smile and her tail starts wagging in circles like she could not be more excited. If you think you want to be the person that Lorelei gets to wake up to, please reach out so we can schedule a meet and greet!
