Lola's Story

Lola is a gorgeous caramel coated dog that was a victim of "no pets allowed" when her family moved. So they surrendered her to the New. York Animal Care Centers where she was so frightened, avoidant and which she was amongst a sea of dogs.

Her time was coming to an end and a wonderful woman stepped up to save her life.

These are LOLA's STATS:

APPROXIMATE AGE: 2 yrs old
APPROXIMATE WEIGHT: 50 lbs
BREED(S): German Shepherd mix
SPAYED OR NEUTERED: yes

GOOD WITH:

KIDS: It is known that Lola lived in a family with 2 children of 8 and 15 yrs of age. Lola did very well when my 12 yo niece was properly introduced to her. It is unknown how Lola behaves around younger children. (Her former owners said she lived amongst 4 adults, 2 children (5 and 15 yo), 2 other dogs, 1 cat)

STRANGERS: With slow introduction, Lola does well with unfamiliar individuals. She tenses out when passes strangers during her walks but usually passes without pulling her leash. once, while inside the elevator, Lola growled and barked at a person trying to enter the elevator. I would not recommend any close contact with strangers yet.

OTHER DOGS: It is known that Lola previously lived with 2 large dogs. She is doing very well with 2 small dogs while living with us. I used a slow introduction and a crate to introduce them. Lola was not noticed to guard her toys and was playing well with my dogs. Lola is gentle during her play time and appears to be aware of her size. Lola is reactive to unfamiliar dogs outside although she is doing significantly better compared to her first week. If seeing a dog in a distance, she still pulls her leash but is able to walk away now without barking or growling. Lola is not recommended to have a close contact with unfamiliar dogs yet or going to dog park.

ON LEASH: Lola showed good progress in leash training but gets easily destructed by other dogs or squirrels. She pulls her leash when sees something that she gets interested in, but I am usually able to get her attention back and to stop her from pulling.

CATS: Lola is known to live with a cat in her previous home. She was friendly with my 2 cats and did not show any signs of aggression although my cats were not exactly nice to her.

CRATE TRAINED: yes

HOUSETRAINED: It appears that in her previous home, Lola was spending most of her time in a crate. In my home, she spends plenty of time walking free in the apartment, and occasionally, on some days, she has pee accidents. She is doing significantly better, but will need a little work here.

CAR: No major issues, although Lola appears to be a little nervous while riding a car.

PREFERRED FOREVER HOME FOR YOUR FOSTER: Lola is a sweet and genuine girl who has been through a lot. Despite that, she still can trust people showing her loyalty and affection. In a loving, caring home, she will thrive and shine. Lola will do well in a home with a friendly, confident dog. Her owner should be able to provide her with the necessary structure and exercise, be physically active, have experience in training, and be willing to involve a trainer if needed. It is unknown how Lola behaves around young children, so I would say, preferably no children under 6. It looks like Lola can be a perfect city dog taking walks in a nearby park as well as to live in the countryside and enjoy outdoors. Although it appears that Lola was never trained to walk on a leash before, or was never socializing with dogs or people outside, Lola appears to be very trainable, and she enjoys being praised and given treats when following commands.

INTERESTING QUIRKS/BEHAVIOR: It appears that Lola has some hound blood in her. She runs like a hound, and those who were around these beautiful hunting dogs know exactly what I mean. She is at a high energy level, and I started taking her to my morning runs, which she enjoys a lot. Lola is an outdoor junkie: she loves parks and the ocean, and she is always curious about new things that she sees. At home, Lola will curl up with her family on a couch while watching Netflix and will be enjoying her belly rubs and snacks. She got very attached to my little chihuahua and follows her everywhere letting her lead.

ISSUES: Lola needs to work on her leash training and reactivity to stranger dogs and people.
