His current owner cares deeply for him, but due to multiple health issues, she is no longer able to give Lionel the time, training, exercise, and socialization he needs to truly thrive.

Meet Lionel

Lionel is a handsome German Shepherd mix with a story of resilience and second chances. Estimated to be 5–6 years old, Lionel originally came from an Arkansas shelter after being found as a stray in heartbreaking condition. He was severely underweight, malnourished, suffering from mange, and heartworm positive when he entered the shelter. He was scheduled for euthanasia, but was rescued just in time and given the opportunity to recover.

After spending time in foster care completing heartworm treatment, Lionel made his way to Wisconsin in December weighing around 70 pounds. Since then, he has fully recovered, gained about 20 pounds, and is now a healthy 90-pound boy ready for a fresh start with the right family. Lionel is not a wild or overly excitable dog, but he does need a home committed to giving him regular exercise, continued training, and stimulation. He is a big boy so needs someone who can handle his size. He is potty trained, crate trained, and walks nicely on leash with a pinch collar. He also knows commands like sit and has a solid foundation to continue building from.

Lionel is good with other dogs and has done well around children, though because of his large size and possibly bumping into the littles, older respectful kids would be the better fit for his next home.

He has also been around outdoor cats. Lionel has generally done well when the cats are calm, stay nearby, or rub on him, but may want to chase if they run, so a cat-savvy home or slower introductions would be ideal.

Lionel is a loyal, beautiful, intelligent dog with an old soul who has overcome a lot. He simply needs a home that can better meet his needs.

Age: About 5 years old
Gender: Male
Weight: 90 lbs
Breed: German Shepherd mix
Spayed/Neutered: Yes
Potty Trained: Yes
Crate Trained: Yes
Leash Manners: Yes
Good with Dogs: Yes
Good with Cats: Has been around outdoor cats, chase risk if they run
Good with Kids: Yes, older kids preferred

Lionel deserves a home that can continue helping him succeed and give him the structure, activity, and companionship he needs.
