Liam: Male Shih Tzu/Chihuahua mix puppy DOB June 2, 2025's Story

Meet Liam!

PLEASE READ OUR PUPPY ADOPTION POLICY HERE BEFORE APPLYING https://hobohavenrescue.ca/puppy-adoption-policy

Liam is a Shih Tzu/Chihuahua mix male puppy DOB June 2, 2025
who joined our rescue from a hoarding situation along with his three brothers
To view all of the puppies and our other adoptable dogs, please visit https://hobohavenrescue.ca/current-dogs

Each dog in our care has their own album on facebook where we post regular updates including videos and more photos, please click here to view our albums of dogs in our rescue https://www.facebook.com/hobohavenrescue/photos_albums

Based on our assessment of his temperament so far, he would be fine as an only dog in the home or also be fine in a home with another dog IF the dog is a younger, playful dog whom would be tolerant and accepting of a very boisterous puppy.

The puppies have now had their first vet visit, first vaccinations and their adoption will include DHPP booster vaccination, rabies vaccination, and neuter surgery . Approx adult weight 15-20lbs
As a mixed breed these puppies are not hypoallergenic

Notes from Liam's foster mom:
Liam wakes around 7am. He's so excited to see his foster parents that he usually dribbles a little pee but then we take him outside for potty in the backyard, where he finishes peeing and usually has a morning poop as well.

He explores the backyard supervised for 10-15 minutes and then comes in for his breakfast. Then for the next 1-2 hours, there is a combination of ball therapy, play time with toys and wrestling with his biological puppy brother, after which he has a nap until lunch time.
The afternoon and evenings are a repeat of the morning session with the added bonus of playing a game of hide and seek to find the freeze dried treats and more nap time. Before bedtime, Liam goes outside for his last potty break, then goes into his crate around 10-10:30pm. He whines for a couple of minutes and then drifts off to sleep.

Liam gets very excited for his meal times and loves freeze dried treats.

Liam is being fostered with his biological brother and the foster family's adult female Cocker spaniel. He quickly bonded with her and seeks her out for comfort at nap time and for quieter play time (when not wrestling with his brother). He has not met with any other dogs outside his foster home.

Liam is good with meeting with new people that come into our home and is very happy when new people pick him up and give him cuddles.

Good with cats? Unknown

There are no guarding behaviours.

Housetrained? No
Crate trained? Yes
Liam is adjusting well to his crate. When it's crate time, we put a few treats in the crate so that he views it as good experience. After the treats are gone, he whines for a few minutes and then settles and goes to sleep.

Liam is fine with touching his ears, tail, paws, and even trimming is face/paws with an electric trimmer. He squirms a little when getting his eyes cleaned but is easily calmed with swaddling.

Liam loves to wrestle with his brother but he is not usually the instigator . He loves small toys that he can carry away and chew on. When he's tired, he will often find a quiet place, usually with his foster's dog and go to sleep.

Liam needs to be watched to ensure he is chewing on appropriate things. He likes to chew on human feet and will try to chew on pee pads from time to time. He can be easily distracted away from things that are not appropriate to be chewed by guiding him towards to his toys.

Liam has an underbite and his lower teeth are pushing into his upper palate. This is currently being treated by his foster with ball therapy. He also has an umbilical hernia which will need to be repaired at the time of neutering-covered by the rescue of course.

Liam loves his food and is rapidly gaining weight. He and his brother are being fostered together and while each given their own food bowls, they will often eat together from the same bowl and then they will move on and share the second bowl. He routinely eats a little, then walks away, then comes back in a minute for more. He repeats this a few times until the bowls have been licked clean.

Liam will potty outside when taken out at regular intervals, however if playing inside and he needs a pee break, he will seek out a pee pad and use it. In short time that Liam has been in foster care, he has quickly learned not to potty in his crate during the night. He has not yet been trained to 'ask' to go outside.

Liam is well on his way towards learning to come, by following the lead of his foster's dog .

Liam quickly gravitated to the female adult dog in his foster home, and and takes comfort in snuggling with her. He would benefit in an adoptive home that has another pet that would tolerate Liam snuggling with them but is also young and playful and would tolerate puppy behaviours appropriately.

Liam was rescued from a hoarding environment where he was kept indoors and was not properly socialized nor given a lot of human nurturing. Initially, he would run away if you tried to pick him up. Since coming into foster care, he is eager to be picked to go outside for potty and playtime. He loves being outside, rolling in the grass and digging in the garden, and will quite happily rollover in the grass for some belly rubs.

Liam is very calm in his travel carrier when being transported.

He will thrive in a home provided he has significant low key, positive gentle socialization with a variety of people that allow him to approach at his own speed and have treats and gentle petting, or meeting for dog dates with trusted dogs who are indifferent or low energy. (Not leashed greetings with strange dogs or quick, forced encounters with strangers, nor dog parks ever!

His ideal home is with a family who understands he has things he needs to improve upon and is willing to make sure he has the right exposure and training to set him up for success.

As a young pup it is important he be (positively and appropriately) exposed to lots of new places, people and situations.

Older children whom are dog savvy and respectful are welcome in a home set up for safety to prevent stair accidents or door darting. Liam is a tiny fragile puppy who is not suitable for younger children for safety and to meet his needs best.

Adoption Fee $850-includes vaccinations, microchip, neuter surgery, deworming, flea/tick/heartworm prevention and all vet care, food and supplies during their time with us.
Our adoption fees do not completely cover the costs incurred by our rescue including rising vet expenses, food, supplies and transportation
Anyone questioning adoption fees is invited to call your vet for a quote on providing everything that is done for our dogs prior to their adoptions.

Hobo Haven is located in St Jacobs Ontario.
For approved families, we require in person meetings in St Jacobs ON

If you are interested in applying to adopt a dog from Hobo Haven Rescue, please use this link to submit an application
https://hobohavenrescue.ca/dog-adoption-application

An adoption application must be completed and approved, including vet references as well as a home visit (Zoom during COVID), prior to meeting available dogs.
All dogs are placed in loving foster homes during their time with us, we do not have a shelter to visit.

We do not allow applicants to visit until pre-approved for adoptions. Our dogs are in private foster family homes, not in a shelter.

Any questions may be emailed to hobohavenpetrescue@gmail.com

Due to the high volume of applications received for our dogs, priority of replies will be given to applicants who meet the criteria mentioned in the pet's profile.

We understand how disappointing in can be if your family is not an ideal match for our dogs , but please understand that our policies are for the dog's best interests first and foremost.
We put a lot of time and effort into carefully assessing each dog's individual temperaments and personalities/needs.

Please do not ask us to make exceptions

Emails are best, our volunteers work full time and are often not able to answer or return phone calls in a timely manner.
