Lexi in Springfield, Massachusetts's Story
Hi! I’m Lexi, I’m learning what it feels like to be a loved and cherished family dog.

I was born around August 6, 2020, and weigh 9 lbs. Before HALO rescued me, I spent my life in a puppy mill. I didn’t get to experience many of the things most dogs take for granted—living in a home, sleeping on a comfy bed, going for walks, exploring new places, or simply knowing that I was safe and loved.

But that was my old life. My new life is pretty wonderful!

I’m currently living with my foster mom in Springfield, Massachusetts, and she says I’m a very sweet, polite and smart girl. I have very good manners!

I’ve discovered that I really like affection. I’ll come over when I want some attention, and you can pet my head, rub my back and neck, and even give me belly rubs. I may be a little unsure when I first meet someone new, but just give me a little time to get to know you. Once I realize you’re my friend, I’m happy to let you love on me.

I’m getting pretty brave about exploring the world, too. I’ve been to a farmers market, met men and women and even briefly met a 5-year-old child. None of it bothered me. I also went to the vet, where I calmly saw a kitty in a carrier and heard another dog barking. There are so many new things to see and smell!

I really like other dogs. I’ve met both big and little ones and haven’t been afraid. I’ve initiated play with my foster brother and run alongside my foster sister. Sometimes I play with toys, too, and even squeaky toys don’t scare me.

My foster mom says I’m really smart. When I get tangled in my leash, I can figure out which way to step to untangle myself. One time another dog got tangled in my leash, and I figured out how to untangle him, too. Pretty clever, huh?

I walk on a leash, although I admit I get excited and pull a little when we first start out. That’s something you and I can practice together. I’m wonderful about having my harness put on and will patiently wait while you adjust it.

I have some other important accomplishments to brag about. I haven’t had a single potty accident in my foster home! I’m comfortable going outside and coming back inside, and when my foster mom has left for a couple of hours, she has watched me on camera and seen me quietly resting.

I’ve also learned that couches and human beds are AMAZING. I can jump onto the couch by myself, and at night my favorite place to sleep is at the foot of my foster mom’s bed. After where I came from, having a soft, safe place to sleep feels pretty special.

I’m comfortable being picked up, and I’m very trusting about being handled. My foster mom can clean around my eyes and even brush my teeth. I’d rather you leave my paws alone, though. A girl has to have some boundaries!

One of my favorite things is simply exploring. Sometimes I run big circles around the yard, checking everything out. I’m naturally curious and like taking in everything happening around me. There is a whole world out here that I’m finally getting to discover.

My life didn’t have the happiest beginning, but I’m not looking backward—I’m ready for everything that comes next.

I spent my first years in a puppy mill. Now I’m ready to spend the rest of them being someone’s beloved little girl.

If you have a friendly dog, a securely fenced yard, a little patience and a lot of love, maybe you could be the one to show me. Could that someone be you?
Love,
Lexi
