Levi's Story

Levi loves every person he meets! His foster mom says that he's perfectly behaved in the house! He loves to cuddle up next to people on the couch and in bed. She also reports that he does great when he's home alone and is potty trained! He doesn't have any separation anxiety or destructive behaviors. He is also a great watch dog.

Levi was picked up as a stray in Stockton, CA. One of his front legs had an elbow fracture that wasn’t attended to. The tendons were seized up in the fracture, so he couldn’t move his other joint either. The vets think he was probably hit by a car about a month before going to the animal shelter.

He wasn’t well cared for before arriving at the shelter, but he was still the sweetest dog. Because of his bad leg, he needed a rescue group to take him in.

Once he had his leg amputated, he became a whole new dog and adjusted to being a tripod dog very quickly!

Unfortunately, he has osteoarthritis in his hips. The surgeon thinks his previous injury damaged the blood supply to his hips. He needs to stay thin and active with low impact exercise. Luckily, he loves to get daily exercise! Watching him run around, you wouldn’t guess that he has hip issues. He will be need to be on lifelong arthritis treatment. He currently gets monthly injections of Librela and Adequan and a daily joint supplement. Financial support for his monthly injections is available if necessary. No surgery is recommended on his hips at this time.

Levi loves going for walks and going jogging. He is leash reactive when other dogs are close, but when they are across the street, he doesn't react much and has learned "look" to get a treat and focus on his foster mom. He currently wears a muzzle while out for walks for when a close encounter is unavoidable and he does well with it on. Levi lived with a large dog in his foster home for eight months and was great with him. He would do well being the only pet or living with the right dog with slow introductions over a few days.

Fetch is Levi's favorite game in the backyard and the house and he is good about bringing it back and dropping it. This makes it easy for Levi to get the exercise he needs on rainy days, hot days or days when you don't feel like going for a walk.

At home care is easy with Levi, as he allows ear cleaning, nail clipping, brushing, teeth brushing, monthly injections and getting a bath with no problems. He has met a lot of strangers of all ages and does very well with everyone. Bikes, skateboards, canes, hats, etc. don't bother him. Levi is a pro at using a dog door.

Levi has shown some prey drive tendencies in the backyard, so he probably wouldn't do well in a home with cats. He also shows some barrier reactivity with the neighbor's dog, and is still working on that behavior, although it has gotten a lot better.

If you are looking for a super sweet, smart, resilient dog and are up for continuing his training and arthritis meds, Levi might be the dog for you. He is about 3 years old and weighs 35 pounds.

Check out his album for more pictures and videos: https://photos.app.goo.gl/SrfBGaoZnwLW445c9

Contact Levi's foster mom, Brenda, to set up a time to meet him. He is up to date on all veterinary care and is ready for his forever home!
brenda@onelivingsanctuary.org or 510-847-0225
Levi is being fostered in Castro Valley, CA.

One Living Sanctuary's Adoption Policy
We don't currently do very many adoptions because we are a sanctuary. However, we occasionally have animals that aren't fitting in well with the other animals and would benefit from living in a private home. So far, we have been able to find homes for those animals with people we personally know. We are looking forward to having another way to try to find homes for these animals when situations arise. We screen potential adopters over the phone and then have them visit the animal they are interested in to make sure they are a good fit. We follow up with them after they take the animal home to make sure it is working out and to see if they need any support.
