Leverne & Shirely's Story
BONDED PAIR - Daughter and Mother - Thier owner was found dead
Shirley - 8 years & 7lbs, Chi Mix, Spayed & Laverne - 12 years & 8lbs, Chi Mix, Spayed

These senior angels are eligible to join our foster-to-adopt program. Please email fostertoadopt@socialteesnyc.org with the animal's name in the subject line if you are interested! Want to straight up adopt? They love to snuggle together and are definite couch potatoes throughout the day. They love to give kisses, especially in exchange for a belly rub. Shirley acts like a puppy half the time, so curious about people and things wherever she is. She loves to sniff around and chase after birds or small animals. When home, she curls up like a little donut and likes to watch your every move. She'll sit next to you on the couch if you're watching tv or working and quietly spectate. She's a tiny ball of energy and has so much love to give. Laverne is a bit more timid. She's old and wise, calmly trotting behind you on walks or curled up next to her daughter to relax. She loves butt scratches and is a definite cuddle buddy."

Level of dog ownership experience needed:
FLEXIBLE – We predict this dog will be low on the challenge scale with regard to exercise and mental stimulation requirements, but seniors tend to need a lot of help and understanding when it comes to lifestyle and veterinary issues. Seniors usually need quiet, calm environments and routines and do not do well with a lot of bustle, change, and rambunctious movement (kids and young playful dogs, for instance). This dog's adopter will need to be prepared for senior health challenges, which means frequent vet visits and very expensive veterinary bills. (An annual senior blood panel alone costs around $500 in NYC.) Senior care can also take an emotional toll on their humans. Adopting a mature pup is a wonderful thing to do, but it can also be difficult.

ENERGY LEVEL
Low/Med – Pretty chill indoors and won't demand endless amounts of stimulation and exercise but still needs a few walks a day (10-30 min each) for potty breaks and to stretch their legs. Shirley has a bit more energy than Laverne and could benefit from one longer walk each day (45min), but both are very happy snoozing in their bed or on the couch all day.

TOLERANCE TO CITY
Adjusting to the city – Laverne is spooked easily by loud noises, people walking near her, and bustling areas. She's adjusting slowly but will still bow and pull back on the leash pretty often. She calms down quick though once whatever the stimulus has gone away sufficiently. Sometimes she will still just bow and pull seemingly for no reason. I think she needs a home in the suburbs.
Shirley is much more fearless. She'll still get startled but certain things but this is a rare occurrence. She is very eager to sniff anything and everything, and she loves to chase birds and small animals.

POTTY TRAINING
Yes! Both are potty trained, but Shirley has had a few accidents in the house. It also took them both a day or two to adjust to the new space.

COMFORT LEVEL WITH STRANGERS
In between bean – Laverne is timid but still eager to meet new people in calm settings. She gets spooked very easily by footsteps from people on the street outside if they get too close to her.
Social butterfly – Shirley is a social butterfly and loves to say hello to anyone

BEHAVIOR WITH CHILDREN (always requires adult supervision)
We haven't had any interactions so I'm not sure.

SOCIAL BEHAVIOR WITH OTHER DOGS
Laverne doesn't really engage with other dogs.
Shirley will sometimes take interest

RESPECTFUL BEHAVIOR WITH OTHER ANIMALS (cats, small pets, etc.)
Fine to be in a home with cats

MOUTHY BEHAVIOR
Past this stage– Little to no interest in chewing on stuff or putting things in their mouth that aren't food. Doesn't try to chew on hands, feet, etc. during playtime

SEPARATION ANXIETY (Please leave your foster dog home alone every day for at least 20 minutes.)
Past this stage – Completely fine being left home alone. Doesn't cry or exhibit destructive behavior when you leave the apartment or house.

LEASH MANNERS
Getting the hang of it – Shirley gets excited and will pull occasionally but relaxes very quickly when you give her a quick tug. She will zig zag quite a lot though as she sees and smells new things outside. Laverne is well behaved but scared outside in the city so she will pull back and not want to walk at times.

CUDDLE BUG LEVEL
Medium – Both doggos love attention, they will climb on you for pets and belly rubs and will give you hundreds of kisses, but when it's time to settle down, they like to lay in their own space (bed, sofa blanket)

JUMPING ON PEOPLE TO SAY HELLO
Listens to correction – Shirley doesn't really jump on people unless she knows them well (e.g. me as the owner). She'll respond to correction pretty quickly. Laverne is older and I think doesn't have the capability to jump very often but also gets excited when I get home and will put her front paws on my knee when I kneel down and pet them.

CRATE TRAINING
Not at all – Don't even have one, they're itty bitty and well behaved at home.

Medical status:
Healthy for their age as far as we know. Up to date on their DHPP, Bordetella, and Rabies vaccines; heartworm tested if coming from Tennessee or Puerto Rico; spayed/neutered; microchipped; treated with dewormer upon intake. Adopters will need to be ready for senior care – at a minimum, that will be annual checkups including senior bloodwork and a dental post adoption (most senior rescues need one).

How did this dog end up with Social Tees?
Most of our dogs come via partner groups who help us save them from shelters where they are at risk of euthanasia in Tennessee, Los Angeles, and Puerto Rico. There are very few spay/neuter resources there and many more animals in those areas than there are people to adopt them. Rescue groups like ours bring them to the northeast where the desire for pets like these allows us to save their lives.

PLEASE NOTE: We cannot guarantee any breed mix, exact age, or full grown size (if the dog is under a year old). We do our best with very educated guesses.

This animal is not at the Social Tees office, all are in foster homes.

LEARN MORE ABOUT US: socialteesnyc.org and Instagram @socialteesnyc
