After spending more time in our program, we've gotten to know Leono much better, and honestly, we're a little surprised he's still waiting for his person. At first glance, Leono's size and age may cause some people to scroll past him, but those who take the time to meet him quickly discover what a sweet, affectionate, and loving boy he truly is. One of the things our staff and volunteers adore most about Leono is how much he loves human connection. Give him a little patience and kindness, and you'll see him completely melt into your arms. He thrives on attention, affection, and spending quality time with his people. Whether it's staff members, volunteers, or potential adopters stopping by to visit, Leono has consistently shown us what a gentle-hearted companion he can be. When he's not soaking up affection, Leono enjoys getting out for walks and exploring the world around him. He does still need some continued leash training and can be enthusiastic on walks, but he's eager to learn and would benefit from someone willing to continue helping him build those skills. One of his favorite outings is a trip to the local park, where his playful and affectionate personality really shines. He loves rolling in the grass, lounging beside his favorite humans, offering his belly up for rubs, and showing his appreciation through happy leans, hugs, and plenty of kisses. These are the moments where you truly get to see the dog behind the kennel.<br/><br/>We think Leono would make an excellent companion for an active single person or couple looking for a loyal best friend. He'll do best with someone who can provide structure, exercise, patience, and continued guidance as he settles into home life. In return, he'll reward you with endless affection, companionship, and devotion. And who knows? With a little time and continued training, we think Leono could become a wonderful hiking partner, trail buddy, or adventure companion for someone who enjoys spending time outdoors. This sweet boy has waited far too long for his chance. If you've been considering adding a dog to your family, we encourage you not to overlook Leono simply because of his age or size. Sometimes the dogs who wait the longest have the most love to give.<br/><br/>Please help us spread the word-and even better, come meet him for yourself. We have a feeling you'll understand why we've all fallen for this special boy.<br/><br/>Straight from the colorful beach town of San Pancho, Mexico, Leono is the kind of dog who leaves a lasting impression everywhere he goes. This handsome young boy is believed to be around a year old and is what's known locally as a "Carmelo" - a newly recognized Mexican breed known for their intelligence, athleticism, loyalty, and adventurous spirit. Leono's story hasn't always been easy. He was originally brought to San Pancho to guard a construction site on the outskirts of town, but when the project ended, he was sadly abandoned and left to survive on his own. Over time, this sweet boy became known around town for wandering from shop to shop and house to house, winning people over with his friendly personality and gentle nature. Members of the community helped care for him, feeding him and showing him kindness until rescuers were finally able to get him to safety after he was hit by a car. Despite his rough beginnings, Leono absolutely adores people and has the happiest outlook on life. He's affectionate, playful, confident, eager to please, and always ready for the next adventure. Whether it's hiking trails, beach days, exploring the outdoors, playing with toys, or curling up for cuddles afterward, Leono is happiest when he gets to be part of the action with his humans.<br/><br/>Since arriving into our program, Leono has been doing wonderfully. He's house trained, crate trained, leash trained, and already knows several commands including sit, down, heel, and leave it. He's incredibly smart, food motivated, and genuinely enjoys learning and connecting with his people. His foster describes him as: "An absolute sweetheart with puppy-like bursts of joy and energy. He's affectionate, eager to please, and truly loves to cuddle like a giant baby. He's also incredibly smart and wants so badly to do the right thing." Leono does great around people, older dog-savvy kids, and other dogs with proper introductions, and he especially loves smaller dogs. He'd make an incredible fit for someone who enjoys hiking, outdoor adventures, beach trips, walks, and an active lifestyle - but who also appreciates a dog that's equally happy to snuggle on the couch afterward.<br/><br/>Leono is truly such a special dog - affectionate, loyal, goofy, adventurous, and full of heart.
