Leo's Story

The MexiMutt Project is an initiative of Born Again Pit Bull Rescue. Millions of dogs live on the streets in Mexico, and our rescue works at the source through spay/neuter programs, rescue, medical care, and adoption into loving homes.
- Since 2019, we have matched over 500 dogs with loving homes & spayed/neutered over 3,500 dogs in Mexico.
- All of our dogs are currently in foster care in Guadalajara, Mexico. They are listed in Oregon for adoption purposes because our rescue is based there.
- Once an adoption is approved, the dog will fly to Portland, Oregon (PDX). Most dogs arrive within 2-4 weeks after approval, depending on flight availability.

INTERESTED IN ADOPTING? Please fill out an application at: www.bapbr.org/apply
(We are unable to respond to adoption inquiries submitted through Petfinder)

**************************
Meet LEO
- AGE: 3 years old (estimated)
- WEIGHT: 11 lbs
- GOOD WITH KIDS who know to respect a dog's space and belongings.
- HOUSEBROKEN? Not 100% yet. As rescues that lived outdoors, they'll need some time to adjust. Most adapt within 1-2 weeks of consistent training.
- The breed listed is our best guess (since they're rescues!)

The marks on Leo's neck told part of his story before he could: the worn evidence of a dog who had spent a long time tied up and going nowhere. His former owner claimed she had taken him off the street, but when the vet bills mounted and no one could pin down what was wrong with him, she gave up and set him back out on the street. That's when Susana stepped in. She talked to the woman, and she brought Leo home.

A dermatologist finally gave his condition a name: vasculitis. It sounds frightening, but the truth is reassuring. It isn't contagious to people or to other dogs, and with steady treatment and good care, Leo can live a long, full, good-quality life.

When he arrived, Leo was thin and covered in raw wounds, frightened and slow to trust. Under treatment he has blossomed. He's put on weight, his lesions have healed dramatically (a few faint scars remain, but he looks worlds better), and the scared little dog has grown into a confident, affectionate one. "He's a dog who makes you fall in love," Susana says. "So sweet, so calm, so easy to adore."

Leo loves few things more than settling in with a good bone or a favorite toy. But his real gift is affection. "When you hug him, it's like he hugs you back," Susana says. He rests his head against you, goes completely still, and just soaks in the moment. He can get a little jealous too: when he's the one being cuddled, he'd rather the other dogs keep their distance, thank you very much.

He's good with dogs, cats, and kids, and he's calm and gentle by nature. His vasculitis means lifelong medication, but it's genuinely simple, just his meds on a schedule, and over time he'll likely settle onto a maintenance dose. He's young, he's thriving, and he has every reason to look forward to years of good living.

Leo is ready to give his whole heart to someone, the kind of dog who turns a hug into a two-way thing. His care is easy, and his love is enormous.

Could you be the person he rests his head on?

*************************
Ready to apply?
