Leo's Story

Leo is a 5 month old Great Pyrenees pup who was left outside in the cold when his owners abandoned the property he was born at. Thankfully he has had a committed foster family and will only ever remember the type of life that every dog dreams of having. Leo is a sweet, affectionate, pup who loves romping around and exploring in the yard with other dogs as much as he enjoys getting attention from his people. He is still a puppy who needs close supervision when he is not in the crate, but he’s doing a great job of not chewing on things he shouldn’t and only digging in certain parts of the yard. He’s treat-motivated and learning new skills has been pretty easy. Leo has an independent streak as Great Pyrenees often do. When given a command, Leo will take your request into serious consideration, but it might not be at the top of his list of priorities right then. Leo needs a person who is more stubborn than he is who will take the time to follow through and wait him out.Once Leo knows that he’s not going to “out-stubborn “ his people, he‘s very agreeable and cooperative, but he will test the waters initially. For this reason Leo's adopters will get out exactly what they put in. Leo tends to be on the submissive side with other dogs in his foster home and is very easy to get along with. He has gained confidence as he’s grown and he just doesn’t see a reason to argue with the other dogs most of the time. He loves a good game of chase out in the yard and tends to use his teeth and dog talons when playing. He likes to put his paws on other dogs to get them to play, but he backs down fairly quickly if his playmate doesn’t like that. He’s gotten along great with all his foster siblings as well as with cats and small caged animals in his foster home, but will give chase if an unfamiliar animal passes through the yard. Leo is still a little uneasy when on walks near busy highways, but is doing much better as he gains confidence. He doesn’t seem bothered by loud noises such as thunder. If this confident dude full of personality sounds like the one for you, put in your adoption application today!

Giant Breed Experienced Homes Only.

BDHP Puppy Policy

All puppies less than 12 months of age are too young to be spayed/neutered so they are adopted out on special puppy spay/neuter agreements with a $50 refundable spay/neuter deposit. Adopting families must agree to get the puppy altered within 2 weeks of 12 months of age (or when their growth plates close) and send proof of S/N to BDHPI accordingly. Adopting families are expected to pay an adoption fee of $700 minimum for purebred puppies AND will have the additional costs listed above, so please keep this in mind.

When adopting a puppy, new families need to be prepared for not only a substantial financial investment, but also a significant time commitment in order to raise your puppy properly. Crate training is a critical part of setting them up for success as well as potty training. You can't leave a puppy in the crate for longer than 4 hours max and they typically have to be let outside every hour when you are home since their bladder is not as big as an adult. You will want to make sure your puppy gets regular exercise and has plenty of mentally stimulating chew toys such as puzzle toys(food cubes, busy buddy toys, kongs, etc). Socialization the first 6 months is critical to their development socially and once they have had all of their shots, you will want to take your new puppy everywhere you can to get them used to meeting lots of new people, different dogs, and visiting places outside of the home. Obedience training is also extremely important (and actually part of our adoption agreement requirements) so that your puppy grows up to be a gentle giant instead of a giant monster!

Big Dogs Huge Paws, inc's Adoption Policy
Many of the gentle giants that come into our rescue have been neglected or abused. Others have simply been abandoned by their owners due to a divorce, a new baby, moving, or natural disaster. We are often told that they got “too big” or “too expensive” and many of the dogs below come to us with very little training. Despite their past, rescue dogs are incredibly forgiving and very eager to please. They have so much to give and are all very special. We are looking for forever homes and permanent families who will love their new addition unconditionally and give them the love and support they need and deserve for the rest of their lives. Adoption Requirements and Guidelines a. Applicants must have never been convicted of any animal abuse laws. b. All potential adopters must completely fill out and sign the adoption application and the information must be verified and approved by a BDHPI representative. c. All appli
