Leo's Story
ADOPT LEO

Leo’s story didn’t start easy—but we believe his next chapter will be the best one yet.

Around 3 years old and likely a Catahoula mix, Leo is a large, athletic boy with the gentlest soul you’ll ever meet. Despite everything he’s been through, he remains incredibly docile and loving with people.

Leo came from Kern County Shelter, where he did not receive the kindness every dog deserves. After being rescued, he endured more instability—including being left crated in a van during the scorching summer—before finally landing with someone who saw his worth.

When Leo entered the PAWs to Prison program, he was completely shut down. It took his incarcerated handler a full month to earn his initial trust—and two and a half months before Leo fully opened his heart. That bond speaks volumes about his loyalty. In fact, at graduation, Leo was the only dog allowed off leash because he was so trustworthy. He never left his handler’s side.

Leo is sensitive and soulful. Raised voices cause him to retreat, not react. If another dog takes his toy, he doesn’t argue—he’ll gently “tell” his person instead. He chooses peace every time.

About Leo:

Strong & athletic

Extremely smart

Never aggressive

Dog and cat friendly

Playful & loves fetch

Loves water

Walks beautifully on leash

Shy at first, but deeply loyal once he trusts

Knows an impressive list of commands:
Sit • Down • Lay • Stay • Come • Heel • Shake • Rollover • Stand • “Go to bed” • “Get it” • “Get remote” • “Watch me” and more!

Leo thrives with calm, patient leadership and will bond deeply with his person. He’s not just looking for a home—he’s looking for someone who will show him the stability and love he’s always deserved.

If you’re ready for a loyal, intelligent, gentle companion, Leo is ready for his forever.
