Lazarus's Story

Meet Lazarus, a dog with a heart of gold. This handsome boy is a survivor. His story is one that won't long be forgotten that speaks volumes to the resilience and unconditional love that a dog is capable of. Lazarus is 6.5 year old, 55lbs pounds of golden, fluffy rolls and the sweetest pittie smile.

You would never know how much Lazarus has suffered, from meeting this super loving boy who wags his tail at every human he meets. He now loves getting hugs, kisses, and the attention all day, every day from his foster family, but he wasn't such a happy boy too long ago. Lazarus lived the life so many pit bull commonly suffer in Texas, on the end of a rusted chain. For 6 years, he lived on the end of a rusted chain, tied up to a tree with little shelter, in his own filth and often no food or water unless neighbors came to feed him. He spent six cold winters and 6 blistering summers in his own personal hell. It was rare that anyone came to play with Laz and was only occasionally fed.He drank water from a big dirty bucket filled with bugs, refilled by rain. He has no bed or any shelter that protected him from the elements. This is the life of of a chained dog in Texas, and until recently, this barbaric practice of 24/7 tethering was considered humane and perfect legal.

In July 2021, an animal advocate reached out to Doggedly for help. With so many dogs in need, we were only able to help if a foster was found, so the advocate networked and found the most amazing people to foster. Laz was finally removed from that unsafe environment and transported to a place where he can receive the love and care he deserves. Lazarus had a severe case of pneumonia when he came to Doggedly . His lungs were 80% blocked and filled with fluid. It took several months of antibiotics and steroids for his lungs to heal enough so he could be neutered. After his neuter while on slow kill treatment, Lazarus had a complication with his lungs and developed blood clots. His lungs are severely scarred due to the many years that this dog has lived with adult heartworms. Under the care of Dr. Huddleston, an expert in the field of heartworm treatment, it was determined that Lazarus needed fastkill heartworm treatment broken out over 3 months due to the condition of his lungs. He needed chest x-rays every 6 weeks to monitor his progress. It's been a long road for Lazarus's recovery, to say the least.

Luckily for Laz, the most loving and patient foster family took him under their wing to heal. He looked so scared at first, but Laz eventually enjoyed being in his new home where he met his two bestest dog friends Pepper and Rosie. This boy has a zest for life and acts like a giant puppy. He loves his sisters and loves being with other pups. They play tug, jump on the bed, and even wrestle! This smart boy has undergone professional training in his foster home as well, during his decompression phase to "learn how to dog". Despite everything he's endured at the hands of human, Lazarus is a gentle, kind hearted boy and is a total snuggle monster. He is super affectionate, friendly and trusting of humans. He just wants so badly to be loved. His socialization has been a breeze, despite spending many years on the end of a chain, being in a loving home has brought the light back into this boy's eyes.

Lazarus loves adventures with his humans. He is a total champ when he's out at the pub or bar, watching his foster dad's band! He also loves to craft with his foster mom, and he even loves gardening (but he definitely needs to work on his green thumb!). This super sweet boy is medium activity. While he is still going through heartworm treatment, Lazarus's exercise has been restricted, but once he is healed, he will happily accompany you on all of the hikes, runs and adventures at the park! This boy is a breed ambassador and embodies all of the qualities we love about pit bulls, from his fierce loyalty to his unconditional love for his people. He is truly a gem, and deserves a second chance at an amazing life.

Lazarus is has been successfully treated for heartworms and will test negative within the next few months. He is neutered, microchipped and fully vaccinated. All he needs is the perfect family to give him the life he deserves!
