We found him chained to a neighbors fence, happily bouncing on his hind legs as if life couldnt be better. But no dog deserves to spend life on a chain. Once Link arrived at Upshot Dog Rescue, we quickly realized we had something special.

At first, we thought Link might be a Miniature Pinscher mix. After spending weeks watching him, it became obvious that hes much more likely an Australian Cattle Dog mix. Every single day, he reminds us exactly what he was bred to do.

If you know Australian Cattle Dogs, youll immediately recognize Links instincts. Everything he does is classic cattle dog behavior. He gathers anyone who wanders off, blocks their path, rolls puppies onto their backs, sits on them to keep them in place, bumps them with his nose, and happily tries to herd everyone around him—including people! Watching him work is fascinating because these arent behaviors hes been taught—theyre simply who he is. He has completely appointed himself as the puppy supervisor, and he takes his job very seriously.

He weighs about 25 pounds and is athletic, intelligent, and always looking for his next job. He thrives when he has a purpose, whether thats running, exploring, playing with another dog, or making sure everyone is exactly where he thinks they should be.

One of the sweetest things about Link is the balance between his hardworking nature and his affectionate side. As hes learned that people are safe, hell stop whatever hes doing to run over for hugs, melt into your arms, and then lean in with his adorable little booty for scratches. Its especially cute because he doesnt have much of a tail at all! Once hes gotten all the love he wants, hes right back to work, happily trotting off on his next adventure.

Weve also discovered that Link is a completely different dog outside of the busy rescue environment. With just one or two other dogs, he relaxes, focuses, and truly settles into himself. The constant activity of a large rescue is simply overstimulating for a young working dog like Link. As you can imagine, in a rescue caring for so many dogs, we cant always give Link the one-on-one mental and physical outlet hed love every single day. Even on days when hes only getting a few walks and playtime, he still settles nicely, enjoys his crate, and remains a happy, affectionate dog. We can only imagine how much hell flourish once he has a family of his own and a routine that allows him to fully channel his incredible instincts and intelligence.

Link is crate trained, rides nicely in the car, and enjoys joining his people on outings. Hes looking for someone who appreciates the intelligence, humor, loyalty, and incredible instincts that make Australian Cattle Dogs such amazing companions.

If you think Link sounds like your kind of dog, wed love to hear from you.

Visit upshotdogrescue.org to submit an adoption application.
