Koala was born with hydrocephalus, a condition where excess fluid builds in the brain, creating pressure and sometimes causing neurological symptoms. Koala is currently symptom-free. He's a regular puppy who enjoys walks and playing with friends! Koala is under the care of a neurologist and he has received an MRI to give us a better picture of his condition to see what treatment might look like. Unfortunately, the MRI showed us Koala is not a candidate for a shunt placement surgery because his hydrocephalus is too severe. The good news is he is doing great on his medication regiment of Prednisone (a steroid) and Prilosac (a medication available at any drug store to help decrease the amount of cerebral spinal fluid produced).
Koala is kennel trained and sleeps quietly in his kennel throughout the night and while his foster family is gone, without any accidents. He loves to be outside with his family, chasing them around the yard and playing with sticks. Koala needs a fenced yard and would not be suitable for an apartment. He loves the other dogs in his foster home and must have another playful dog in his forever home. He has never been around cats but we imagine he would have no issue with them. Koala likes his personal space, and while he has done okay with the children in his foster home, he would prefer a family without kids. He would do okay with dog-savvy kids who can respect his personal space. Koala loves chew toys and playing tug-o-war. He likes to go for walks in the neighborhood and has great leash manners. He knows sit and stays off the furniture. Koala is working hard on potty training, but due to his medical condition may never be fully potty-trained. He currently wears belly bands and tolerates them well.
Koala is looking for an adopter who is dedicated to giving him the care he needs. He could very well go on to live a relatively normal and long life. His hydrocephalus could also decrease his life span. It is unfortunately something we cannot know until we get there. Regardless, Koala is a fantastic little dog who deserves the chance to live a fulfilled life with lots of love! Koala's ideal home would have another dog (this is required: Koala thrives with doggy companions), an understanding of special needs and/or neurological conditions, and an established relationship with a veterinarian. If you believe you have these qualities and would like to talk more about Koala, shoot us an email at email@example.com!
