Kimchi's Story
Kimchi is in need of a new home because his current owners are unable to care for him any longer - please read below for details, and contact details.

1. Age and weight

6 years and 51 lbs.

2. Spayed/Neutered or not

Neutered

3. Vaccination status (rabies, DHLPP etc)

All up to date

4. Being wormed/flea/tick treated monthly?

Yes

5. Any medical issues (when did he/she last have a vet check up?)

Last Check Up: March 7

Moderate Osteoarthritis, hip dysplasia with his left hip more affected than his right. Requires joint supplements and pain management; potentially left hip surgery and physical therapy in the coming years.

6. How does he/she behave around men/women/children/strangers/people on the street/other animals

Kimchi either ignores or is slightly curious to sniff other people on the street. He has shown some leash reactivity to medium to larger sized dogs on walks, but he has successfully interacted with medium to large sized dogs on occasions where the respective owners can facilitate a more spacious introduction and he has been on a long leash. A trainer has indicated that Kimchi is just too excited to see other dogs; the shelter previously indicated he did well in a group of dogs off leash.

After some training, he knows now that he sees another dog, he can simply choose to sniff somewhere else or look up to get treats immediately. Or, he's excited to be distracted by a treat in a counting game 1-2-3-treat! (the treat of choice: string cheese)!

7. Normal daily routine (food/exercise)

Kimchi tends to get at least two walks, once between 7-9:30 am and another between 6-7:30 pm. He enjoys a walk in the middle of the day on weekends. His walks are slow and sniffy, about 30-45 min. each.

He gets 3/4 cup of kibble twice a day alongside his medications and supplements (Dasquin Advanced, fish oil, thyroxine for hypothyroidism and Carprofen for hip). He also receives a dental treat every other day, as well as more generalized freeze dried treats during training or on other occasions.

Kimchi usually just wants to hang out near you, on a comfy bed, snoozing or daydreaming.

8. Indoor or outdoor dog? (or both)

Both

9. Level of training (what commands does he/she know/how does he/she walk on leash/reaction to seeing other dogs when on leash)

Kimchi understands sit, down, off (when he is being instructed to leave the bed or couch), and come. Kimchi walks on a loose leash on a 9 ft. leash. He enjoys stopping to experience nature, and doesn't seem interested in most food or garbage or open containers or glass on the ground. If the leash is dropped, Kimchi will also stop.

He doesn't love putting new collars or harnesses around his neck, but he's just fine with his daily martingale walking collar.

10. Any particular likes/dislikes (how is he/she about being handled/petted – any sensitive areas, like ears, feet etc.)

Kimchi is a pretty happy boy that greets you at the door with a wagging tail and smile; he does a little dance when you give him his dental treats. Kimchi likes to lay/lean down on you or sit next to you; in those contexts, he's open to frequent petting or strokes. He also loves having his head massaged; he'll often come up and sit in front of you while you're on the couch, and look back--asking for head pets. It can take him a few hours to be open to pets from new people. He will sometimes duck or walk away to make his own space and return when he's ready for more pets from everyone.

He enjoys a little tug of war and some short range fetch! The great thing about Kimchi is that he only wants to work with you to tug his toys apart -- he has no interest in chewing or tearing up anything else. If you show one particular toy care and affection, he will take your cue not to

Kimchi tends to be somewhat sensitive around his paws for long periods of handling, but generally is completely fine with being handled. He is sensitive to being brushed (especially the very effective raking brush), so he must be given treats (like fish oil covered broccoli) and practice sit/wait/down while he's being brushed to keep his mind occupied.

11. How does he/she react to riding in the car/going to the vet/can he/she be lifted

Kimchi has been receptive to being lifted when on sedatives. He has been an excellent car rider, but with and without human support in the backseat, where he will sit or lie down on a blanket.

Like other animals, he does not love going to the vet and may shiver, but some gabapentin may help here, and once he actually sees the vet, he walks in just fine.

12. Has he/she ever bitten any other animals/people? If so, what was the severity and was medical action needed?

Not intentionally or out of aggression. If his mouth makes contact during toy play and you make a yelping noise, he stops immediately and becomes very concerned.

13. Any separation anxiety issues or other behavioural issues?

No separation anxiety; he tends to sleep when his human isn't around.

14. Where did you obtain the dog from and why are you attempting to rehome the dog now? How long have you owned the dog?

Kimchi was fostered and then adopted from Two Dog Farms. Prior to moving to Oakland, he was surrendered to a shelter in Los Angeles. His Oakland humans fostered him for three months and then adopted him for another three months. His humans decided to separate and it is difficult for each of them to care for Kimchi on their own due to a variety of reasons including work and travel requirements, as well as family care needs.

Kimchi is very loved and deserves another home that is able to love and care for him.

15. Have you contacted any other rescues for assistance?

No

16. What are the best methods of contact for people interested in either fostering or adopting your dog?

choco27@gmail.com

573-673-5042
