Keefe's Story
Update 11/27- Keefe has been adopted by a splendid couple, making them a 2 Cardi family +3 kitty cats too! Congratulations to Keefe and his new Mom and Dad and big sister GInger too!

11/13 Keefe (pronounced KEY-fee) is an Irish Gaelic name that means cherished, handsome and lovable. He certainly is all that! Based on Keefe's temperament & personality, body type, bone structure and coloring we speculated that Keefe could be a purebred Cardigan Welsh Corgi but we wanted confirmation. We have connected with the Cardigan Welsh Corgi National Rescue Trust program, and their consensus is that Keefe is indeed a purebred Cardi. Our vet estimates that he is 8-10 months old and born this past February.

Keefe was turned in as a stray at an animal shelter and had run out of time there. We found out about him and made arrangements for him to come into our program.

The one word that best describes Keefe is happy happy happy!! He is all wiggles and wags to be included as part of his foster family. Keefe really enjoys people and would probably do well with children ages 9 and older as he would be too bouncy for little ones. He really likes children a lot and was all kisses and snuggles with the 10 year old boy in his foster home and his buddies. He has been introduced to both the mild mannered adult male Pem and playful adolescent Corgi mix in his foster home and he was friendly and appropriate with both keeping in mind his zestful puppy outlook on life. He is having a blast playing zoomies in the back yard. Ready, set, go!! He already knows sit and is eager to please, and seems to have a happy-go-lucky outlook on life. There seems to be nothing "serious" about this fine fellow! He has enjoyed sampling the doggy toy box to try out various toys that squeaked and rolled and he had great fun entertaining himself. He is confident around other dogs and a playful youngster like any dog his age, but is certainly not high energy. He is so very puppy in his play style, and loves to tussle and chase and pounce and then do it all again!

He is crate trained and has had no accidents in the house since his arrival although he does some occasional urine marking and some excitement urination (very common in puppies) which is an altogether different issue that house training. His urge to mark will subside since he has been neutered and as he feels settled into his foster home and as he matures he will do less excitement urinating as well. Meanwhile an easy and simple solution is to have Keefe wear a "belly band" with an absorbent pad around his middle when he is in the house. If he does try to mark he stops himself because he doesn't like the feel of a damp pad against his skin and the pad is easily changed when soiled. Like any youngster his age, he will need ongoing training and guidance to raise him to honorable adulthood. Training classes will be must for this bright and active youngster! We would like for Keefe to have a fenced in yard with a fence that is at least 4' tall as he seems to be an athletic and agile youngster.

Keefe appears to be an outgoing and friendly fellow and is enjoying being loved on and being part of the family. Nylabones were an instant hit and he enjoys squeaky fleece toys too. His favorite seems to be the one in his mouth at the moment!

He is mostly black and white with distinct brindle markings on his face, chest and legs. His coat is in poor condition right now and we wonder if it may grown in to show more brindling now that he is on nutritious foods and eating regular meals. He weighs 23.5 pounds and is a bit on the lean side and needs gain 3-4 pounds. He stands 13" tall at the shoulder.

Keefe is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, dewormed and treated with flea preventative. He saw our program vet for a routine health exam and he appears to be in good health and heartworm tested negative.

$250 adoption donation.

If you are interested in adoption, please fill out an Application prior to contacting us. Our adoption information page has detailed information on the adoption process, and should answer most of your questions.

Special thanks for the following sponsors:

Would you like to be a sponsor?
