KAYLA's Story

11/29/25 14:37 Meet Kayla, a 8 year old female Siberian Husky. Kayla is a sensitive girl who can quickly become stressed out in the kennel environment, that being said, once out on a walk she is extremely sweet and playful, wagging her tail, and being very good on the leash. She is an older gal, but once you get her playing you'll forget instantly! She gets the zoomies, will toss toys around, and even roll around and accept belly rubs! Still, she will end the play session with respect and come over obediently when her name is called. We believe most of her stressful behaviors (howling, growling, tail tucking) would improve in a less stressful, more quiet environment. 09/13/25
Kayla was placed on Needs Rescue Non-Urgent status due to ongoing behavioral challenges that exceed shelter capacity for care.

Kayla is a nervous and sensitive dog who displays stress-related behaviors in the kennel environment, including barking, howling, growling, and a tucked tail while staying at the back of the kennel. She is fearful of other dogs barking and shows signs of anxiety but will approach for treats, indicating some willingness to engage.

Despite her challenges, Kayla shows signs of potential in a calmer setting. Outside of the kennel, she walks well on leash with a low tail wag, displays playful behaviors such as zoomies and picking up and tossing toys, and reliably comes when called. She approaches handlers with her head lowered, sometimes burying her head into their legs, and will occasionally roll onto her belly to accept gentle belly rubs. Kayla leans against her handler and has no issues with handling or returning to her kennel.

Kayla communicates discomfort clearly through lip licking, turning away, crouching, and head turning. These signals must be recognized and respected to prevent escalation. She has shown some improvement with time and consistent handling, and her behavior may improve significantly in a quiet, experienced home or rescue environment.

Kayla’s care needs exceed what the shelter can safely provide long-term. Due to her handling sensitivities and behavioral stress, rescue placement is urgently needed to support her behavioral rehabilitation and provide the calm environment she requires. 10/20/25 17:12 What did we do on today’s adventure: Today was my very first Trails & Tails
outing and I was ready to get out there and explore! I hopped in the car and
immediately claimed my favorite spot - right by the window where I could stick my
head out and feel the wind in my face (even on the freeway). Don't let my grey nose
fool you - I've still got plenty of spunk and energy left in me. Once we hit the trail it
was go time - there was just so much ground to cover and adventures to be had, I
proved I can still put in the miles with the best of them! When we took breaks, I made
sure to lean against my human for some good scratches. I also showed off my solid sit
command whenever treats appeared. We passed most dogs without any issues, though
I did bark at a couple when I got a little too excited, but people, bikes, and all the
other trail activity? No problem at all. This adventure reminded me that life is still full
of wonderful experiences!
What should potential adopters know about me: Kayla is a sweet and spirited
senior girl. While her grey nose might suggest she's slowing down, Kayla still has
plenty of spunk and her adventurous spirit remains strong. She pulls moderately on
the leash, eager to explore everything the world has to offer. Kayla is a sweet,
affectionate girl who likes to lean against her people for scratches and attention. She's
treat motivated and has a solid sit command. She shows occasional minor reactivity
(barking) at other dogs when she gets excited or they come too close but generally
passes dogs without issue. Kayla is looking for a home that offers quiet comfort with
occasional adventures - the perfect balance for spending her golden years. She'd b e
ideal for someone who wants a loving companion with enough energy to enjoy life's
adventures, but who also appreciates downtime and affection.
Three words to describe me: Spunky, Adventurous, Sweet
