Meet Katie the Great!

Update as of 2/20/21:
WASHINGTON D.C.: Pony ? prancing senior #labmix KATIE has decompressed from almost a year in the shelter in warp speed! What we suspect was ‘shelter shock’ and learned reactivity to other dogs has dissipated significantly in the three weeks since we pulled her into our #OneLuckyPup program, thanks to foster mama, Corie, who reports she passes dogs and ignores most these days! Corie has the following to share:

“Katie is an absolute angel! The longer she is with me and settles, the more her tender, loving personality comes out. She is absolutely bananas for hot dogs and cream cheese and loves throw pillows, preferring prefers them built into a mound that she can dig into and nap. Her love of pillow forts and snacks is only rivaled by her love of humans and cuddles. She wants to meet EVERY. SINGLE. stranger and has become the neighborhood mayor.

When KATIE’S on the couch she likes to push close and plop into laps. If you need space to do work, she would still like to have her paw or nose touching you. However, the cutest of all her traits is that she loves to spoon!! KATIE is a big fan of afternoon naps with humans and would like to have her head on the pillow and her full self pressed against you - don’t worry if you move in your sleep, she will readjust!

KATIE is a smart girl who wants to please - she has already learned to stand by the door when she needs to pee and has picked up two new commands since living with me. Any home would be lucky to have this sweet senior!”

KATIE, 11 years, is a young senior who certainly doesn’t look or act her age. The only tell that she suffered a stroke is her pony prance that can sometimes come off as a bit (adorably) clumsy and sweet sideways head tilt. Her cognition and mobility are fully intact! See #AdoptKatieMBC for her full story.

If you’d like an easy going best friend who exudes joy, loves 80’s music (see video) and aims to please, apply at www.mrbonesandco.org/adopt or email elli@mrbonesandco.org with questions. KATIE can be adopted anywhere on the East Coast from Virginia to Maine!

Original post:
WALKING ON SUNSHINE! KATIE’S STORY: For almost a year, senior KATIE, age 11, has waited at a shelter. She was given away by her family in late 2019. Only a few months later, in March 2020, KATIE was found alone in West Babylon and brought to Babylon Animal Shelter. Her owners were tracked down but the woman caring for her had broken her hip and her adult son didn’t want KATIE. For the second time in only a few months, she lost her home.

KATIE had us from her first approach. She led with an adorably wonky head tilt and bobbed like a boat riding gentle waves. She stepped as though delicate flowers were underfoot, laying each paw down gently in a prancing trot her body had adopted to balance a neurological trauma. Despite recently losing her lifelong home and navigating a physical disability in a shelter environment, KATIE is what might happen if sunshine were mixed with sugar.

The last of four long time shelter dogs we brought into our #OneLuckyPup program from BAS, we put KATIE through a day of testing, assessment and MRI at The Animal Medical Center, led by neurologist Dr. Abbie Lebowitz, where we learned KATIE had a stroke. This traumatic event left her with some sweet signature moves, but no serious damage. A CSF tap confirmed lack of disease and supports this diagnosis. Over 60% of dogs like KATIE who experience a stroke lack an identifiable cause and no increased risk of future strokes. What does this mean for KATIE? Well, nothing really. KATIE is just a senior dog in need of a loving home to live out her many golden years left.

KATIE, mildly active, would enjoy a calmer home. KATIE enjoys walks, being talked to, hanging with her peeps and cream cheese.

If you like Sunday morning bagels and can spare a schmear, head to mrbonesandco.org/adopt or email elli@mrbonesandco.org with questions. We’ll consider homes within a 5-hr drive of NYC or Wash DC, where she is being fostered.
