Kasper's Story
Meet Kasper!

Kasper is a double merle Australian Shepherd who was born deaf. (A “double merle” means two merle dogs were bred together, which can result in puppies being deaf and/or blind.) 1 parent was standard while the other was "mini" so he is a medium sized dog. He is slightly smaller in person than he looks like in most of his photos. He is even wearing a small harness.. he just has a lot of fluff.

Despite not being able to hear, Kasper is an incredibly happy, sweet, playful, and loving dog. He adores playing with his dog friends and loves a good game of tug-of-war with his humans just as much.

Kasper does well with all dogs(who like him back of course). Since he was neutered recently, he can occasionally be a little “humpy” with female dogs, but this behavior has already been improving. We like to be upfront about things like this. He does great with male dogs and was raised with his brother, whom he absolutely adored.

He is also respectful of smaller and older dogs, though he may try to encourage them to play if they’re willing. One of Kasper’s best qualities is how well he takes corrections from other dogs if he gets too intense — a wonderful trait to have. He would do just fine in a home with other animals or as the only pet. He’s equally happy being the center of attention!

According to his original family, Kasper was raised around farm animals and did well with them. While we haven’t been able to fully test this ourselves, he has been very respectful of a cat in his foster home. On hikes, he also shows little to no reaction to horses, rabbits, deer, or turkeys passing by besides maybe a bit of initial excitement upon seeing them.

Kasper is fantastic with people of all ages. He loves children and has done great with infants, toddlers, teenagers — truly anyone he’s met. He’s a total lovebug who wants to be a lap dog whenever possible. He sleeps in bed with his foster parents and bonds quickly with his people. He thinks that being pet 24/7 is an obligation that you must abide! And he is not necessarily wrong! If you stop be may gently nudge you to keep going.

He will sometimes bark if he sees someone through a fence, but it quickly turns into butt wiggles and requests for attention. Since Kasper is deaf, this may simply be his way of asking someone to come say hello — because once they do, he’s all kisses and affection.

Kasper has been training using ASL and hand signals and is doing wonderfully. He knows how to sit, lay down, shake, and get on and off beds, couches, and even the car. He also knows how to use potty bells to tell you when he needs to go outside (the bells will go with him). He waits at doors and watches his people closely for cues-but he does try to follow you out of the door at times so it is good to be aware of that. We are happy to go over all of his hand signals with potential adopters.

Kasper can see just fine right now, but because he is a double merle, there is a possibility that he could develop vision loss in the future. We want to be very transparent about this and encourage anyone interested in adopting him to read up on double merle dogs.

Things Kasper is still working on:

• Crate training: Kasper does okay in his kennel once he settles, but he will try to find weak points to escape. A secure kennel will be important if crate training is continued (which will also help with potty training).

• Potty training: Since Kasper was not neutered when he first arrived, he developed some marking habits, especially in areas that smell like other dogs. He has already made improvements and continues to work on this, but it may take time — especially in a new home. He is trained to wear belly bands indoors to protect furniture and was previously trained to use potty pads, which may help during the transition. He can also have occasional excitement pee.

• Recall: Because Kasper is deaf, recall training is more challenging. He is not a good candidate for being off-leash and will need a securely fenced yard. He doesn’t try to run away, but we want to ensure he never has the opportunity to wander into a dangerous situation like a road.

Kasper is a truly special boy who deserves a family willing to understand his disability and continue working with him so he can live a happy, fulfilling life. He has so much love to give — and he deserves nothing less in return.

Adoption fee is $300. He is fixed, chipped, vaccinated, and had a wellness exam.
