Kali's Story

Location: Howard County, MD
Dog name: Kali
Gender: Spayed Female
Age/weight: 6-8 yrs, 84 lbs
Breed: Lab mix
Heartworm status: Negative
Medications/Injuries: No medications. In May 2026, she had a successful surgery to remove 2 large fatty lumps from her underside, and a gummy mass in her mouth (all benign). She has some other fatty lumps on her body that the doctors say are benign. She is a very healthy girl!
Good with people? Yes
Children? Yes! She is great with everyone she meets
Dogs? Leash reactive - she has started training to help correct
Cats? Unknown
Other animals? Leash reactive - has started training
House trained? Yes - 0 accidents in the foster home
Crate trained? Kali does not need a crate, she does very well and is not destructive when left alone at home free-roaming when her foster family is at work. She does not like the crate (will try chewing her way out of it). But she really doesn't need it!
Energy level: Low-mid
Travel well? Yes. Excited to get in the car. She will lay down most of the drive. Occassionally likes to stick her head out the window
Favorite toy/activity: Bones, Kong ball filled with peanut butter, training, going on walks, some fetch, and being around her humans
Leash trained? Yes, will walk alongside you or just in front of you, but leash reactive when she sees any animals or people she doesn't know when we're out on walks (she is calm when meeting new people at our house though
Fence required? Yes

Kali is a sweet 6 - 8 year old, 84 pound lab mix stray from Tennessee. She was brought to the TN shelter in March, and made it up to her foster home in April. During her time with her foster family, her smart, sweet, and goofy personality has shined. She was most likely someone's dog before, since she knows commands (sit, lay down, stay, and here), is fully potty trained, and always wants to be with her humans! In her foster home, Kali has chosen her "person" to follow everywhere and sleep with. I have no doubt she will do the same in her new home. If her "person" is not home, she will follow her other family members. She will lay on the couch with you (if your couch is big enough!) or lay on the floor near you. She will sometimes lay her head/paws on you, but most often she will just lay near you. Inside the home she has a very chill demeanor, and will pretty much just follow you and lay wherever her family is.
Whenever you look at her, she wags her tail and gives you those puppy dog eyes, always putting a smile on your face. She makes a lot of funny, low grunting sounds when stretching and getting comfortable, and she twitches a lot in her sleep! She also drools quite a bit when you're preparing food or about to give her a treat. She is not afraid of loud noises (she is completely chill when there's thunderstorms, when her foster mom plays the drums, and when we have large groups of people at the house). If you're looking for your shadow who will follow you everywhere, a sweet, goofy girl, with a chill demeanor, Kali is the dog for you!
Kali is very smart, LOVES getting food and treats, and loves going on walks, so an ideal home would continue training her and going on daily walks. She sometimes plays with her fuzzy toys or plays fetch when she is excited (like when you get home from work).
Kali is currently working with a trainer to instill a "mark" word. We are also doing leash work and working on her heavy leash pulling when she sees a dog, person, or other animal out on our walks. She is very smart and attentive to her humans, and is very motivated by treats, so we're confident she will learn quickly.

House of Hope Animal Rescue's Adoption Policy
House of Hope Animal Rescue is foster-based. We are not a shelter and do not own a kennel where our dogs are kept. All of our dogs are in foster homes. Once your application is approved, your adoption coordinator will assist you in scheduling a date and time to meet dogs you are interested in at their foster homes. You must be willing to travel to the foster homes to meet potential dogs. Thanks for your understanding. APPLICATION PROCESS All potential adopters are required to complete an adoption application. That can be done online or you can download and complete then mail or email it to us. Once your application is received, we’ll call your references, including your Veterinarian. All of your pets must be current on vaccines and on preventatives.? Once all references are checked, we will get in touch with you to schedule a phone interview to go over your application and our adoption procedures. You may be contacted via email, so please keep an eye on your inbox, junk, and spam folders. Please know that we will reach out to you as soon as possible, but it can take up to 14 days depending on the volume of applications we are receiving. Please be patient with us.? After the phone interview we will set up a time for one of our volunteers to conduct a home visit. This is to ensure that your home is a safe environment for a dog and is the final step in the approval process.? Once your application is approved, you are ready to begin meeting dogs! Because we want each dog to go to the right forever home, it is not guaranteed that you will be approved for the dog for which you applied. In this case, we will work with you so that the right match is made for everyone involved. House of Hope spends a lot of time getting to know each dog so they can be placed with a family they are appropriate for as well as a family that is appropriate for them.?
