Kali's Story

Location: Gleneood, MD

Dog Name: Kali

Gender: Spayed Female

Age/Weight: 68 years, 84 lbs

Breed: Lab Mix

Heartworm Status: Negative

Medications/Injuries: No medications. In May 2026, she had successful surgery to remove two large fatty lumps from her underside and a gummy mass in her mouth (all benign). She has some additional fatty lumps on her body that veterinarians have determined are benign. She is a very healthy girl.

Good with People: Yes

Children: Yes

Dogs: Leash reactive. We have started training this week and will provide progress updates.

Cats: Unknown

Other Animals: Leash reactive. We have started training this week and will provide progress updates.

House Trained: Yes. Zero accidents in the foster home over the past two months.

Crate Trained: Kali does not need a crate. She does very well free-roaming when her foster family is at work and is not destructive. She does not like being crated and will try to chew her way out, but she truly does not need one.

Energy Level: Low to Medium

Travel Well: Yes. She is excited to get in the car and usually lies down for most of the ride. Occasionally, she enjoys sticking her head out the window.

Favorite Toys/Activities: Bones, Kong balls filled with peanut butter, training sessions, walks, some fetch, and spending time with her people.

Leash Trained: Yes. She walks nicely beside you or slightly ahead. However, she is leash reactive when she sees unfamiliar people or animals during walks. She remains calm when meeting new people at home.

Fence Required: A fenced yard is preferred, but not required. She does well with a non-fenced yard as long as she remains on leash. She generally stays close to her person, but if she sees something exciting, such as another animal or person, she may try to run toward it.

Kali is a sweet 68-year-old, 84-pound Lab mix who was found as a stray in Tennessee. She entered a Tennessee shelter in March and arrived at her foster home in April. During her time in foster care, her smart, loving, and goofy personality has truly blossomed.

Kali was likely someones pet at one point. She knows several commands, including sit, lay down, stay, and come. She is fully house trained and thrives on being close to her people. In her foster home, she has chosen a favorite person to follow everywhere and sleep beside, though she happily bonds with other family members as well.

She enjoys lounging on the couch if theres room, or resting nearby on the floor. While she occasionally places her head or paws on you, she is generally content just being close to her family. Inside the home, she has a calm and relaxed demeanor, spending most of her time following her people from room to room and settling wherever they are.

Kali has a way of making everyone smile. She greets you with a wagging tail and soulful eyes every time you look her way. She makes adorable grunting noises when stretching or getting comfortable and often twitches in her sleep. She is also known to drool enthusiastically when treats or meals are being prepared.

If youre looking for a loyal companion who will be your shadow, Kali may be the perfect match. She is sweet, affectionate, goofy, and incredibly devoted to her family.

Kali is highly food motivated and loves training, treats, and daily walks. An ideal adopter will continue her training and provide regular exercise. While she is generally calm, she does enjoy occasional games of fetch and playing with soft toys, especially when excited.

This week, Kali has begun working with a trainer on a marker word and leash skills. We are focusing on reducing her leash reactivity and pulling when she encounters dogs, people, or other animals during walks. Because she is intelligent, attentive, and motivated by treats, we are confident she will continue making great progress. Updates on her training journey will be provided as she advances.

House of Hope Animal Rescue's Adoption Policy
House of Hope Animal Rescue is foster-based. We are not a shelter and do not own a kennel where our dogs are kept. All of our dogs are in foster homes. Once your application is approved, your adoption coordinator will assist you in scheduling a date and time to meet dogs you are interested in at their foster homes. You must be willing to travel to the foster homes to meet potential dogs. Thanks for your understanding. APPLICATION PROCESS All potential adopters are required to complete an adoption application. That can be done online or you can download and complete then mail or email it to us. Once your application is received, we’ll call your references, including your Veterinarian. All of your pets must be current on vaccines and on preventatives.? Once all references are checked, we will get in touch with you to schedule a phone interview to go over your application and our adoption procedures. You may be contacted via email, so please keep an eye on your inbox, junk, and spam folders. Please know that we will reach out to you as soon as possible, but it can take up to 14 days depending on the volume of applications we are receiving. Please be patient with us.? After the phone interview we will set up a time for one of our volunteers to conduct a home visit. This is to ensure that your home is a safe environment for a dog and is the final step in the approval process.? Once your application is approved, you are ready to begin meeting dogs! Because we want each dog to go to the right forever home, it is not guaranteed that you will be approved for the dog for which you applied. In this case, we will work with you so that the right match is made for everyone involved. House of Hope spends a lot of time getting to know each dog so they can be placed with a family they are appropriate for as well as a family that is appropriate for them.?
