Joy's Story

Joy is a sweet little girl with a bit of a spicy side...when it comes to other dogs. She is definitely female dominant so is not a fan of other female dogs. She loves the boys though, big and small and she LOVES cats!

We named her Joy because that's the energy she brings, plus it was the holidays when she randomly showed up at our rescue in December 2024. We checked the camera's and didn't see any cars dropping a dog off, just her running down the road and hanging out until a volunteer pulled up.

Joy is around 3 years old, she knows sit, stay and walks great on a leash! She loves people and seems to be ok around kids.

The reason we've had Joy so long is because she's being dealing with some urinary tract issues since she came in. We noticed she was peeing a little bit a lot and then blood started to be present in her urine. We thought it was a UTI, it wasn't. Stone? Nope. After many vet visits from our regular vet, a specialist in Summerville and NC State Veterinary school, tests and ultrasounds, we still can't get to the bottom of what's going on inside her little body. Her bladder is red and enflamed as well as her urethra. A cystoscopy was done at NC State, where they took samples and biopsies for testing and nothing came back positive. She went through 30 days of doxycycline to see if that would help, and it did a bit, but she was still having the occasional accident. Then she went on Prednisone for 3 weeks to see if it'd help her inflammation. At this point the vet assumes that she has an over active bladder and her adopter needs to know that she'll need frequent potty breaks and time to empty her bladder, otherwise she will have an accident inside. She does know to use pee pads. She doesn't empty her bladder all at once, she'll pee a little here and a little there. Emptying her bladder is important so that an infection doesn't start, which is why she needs to be given time to pee at least 2x.

Obviously, whoever is interested in adopting Joy will get the full story and records on what's been going on with her the past year because that was the short version. Aside from her bladder, she is a very happy and healthy dog and you wouldn't know something is bother her!

WARM - Waccamaw Animal Rescue Mission's Adoption Policy
To begin the adoption process, adopters are required to fill out an application form. Upon receipt a volunteer will conduct a background check with your current or former veterinarian. If a vet is not listed, please explain why. Once a background check has been conducted and approved, a volunteer will email you to set up a meet and greet with the animal you are interested in. If you are applying for a dog and currently have dogs, we do require you to bring them to the meet and greet so that we can see if they will be a good match together. If all goes well with the meet and greet, we then schedule a home visit. It is important that we approve the environment where our adoptees will live the rest of their lives. It's equally important that they meet other animals that live in the same home. Once the application, meet and greet, and home visit notes are reviewed by the Board of Directors, a volunteer will contact you regarding approval or non-approval. We appreciate your kindness, understanding, and patience in this process. Please remember we are volunteers doing this in our free time, so the process can take up to a week or more depending on our volunteers and your schedule. We can't stress enough that these animals have been through a lot in their lives before they came to the rescue. Their well-being comes first. It is very stressful for an animal to bounce from home to rescue to home to rescue, etc. Our goal is to find them their forever home and to not end up back in the system or ever have to relive what they’ve already been through.
