Joy’s FAQs

What is Mercer Humane Society’s adoption process?

The potential adopter completes and adoption application in person or online. This application is reviewed by at least one member of our board. We specifically ask about current or previous pets, including their veterinarian information. We also ask if they rent or own their own home, if renting they must provide their landlords information. The board member will call the vet office to confirm their information and find out if their pet(s) were well cared for and kept up to date on vaccines or other medications. If the adoptee stated they rented a home, the board member will contact the landlord to confirm they are allowed to have a pet, if their is a pet fee, and is their rental policy breed specific. If everything else looks good, no red flags jumping out, then the adoption is approved. At this point the adopter completes the adoption contract and is able to take the pet home. Sometimes this all happens on the same day, sometimes it can take a day or more, depending on the time it takes to confirm the references.
