Jovie - NEED FOSTER, OR FOSTER WITH INTENT TO ADOPT's Story
Jovie just stood in the yard of the kennel at animal control – frozen in place – afraid to move. It was hard to tell if he had a physical issue, or if it was fear based. Second Chance committed to taking him into our program, and Jovie was taken to the vet. There was nothing physically wrong with him… and once he was with people, he appeared to improve. “Shelter shock” was the diagnosis.
Jovie is a 2-3 yr old neutered male standard schnauzer mix that weighs 40#. We think he probably didn’t get much attention during his early years because he still has a few puppy behaviors to work through and he hasn’t socialized much with people. He is a willing learner, but you can’t use any harsh correction because he is quite sensitive to a raised voice. Another mellow dog and someone that is home much of the time would be ideal. Until we can find a foster home for Jovie, he is in a boarding facility.
While waiting to make the trip up to MN, Jovie was in a temporary out-of-state foster home, so I have this information to share. Jovie is both housebroken and kennel trained; he sleeps in the crate overnight. Jovie doesn't like to be around new people or groups of new people - his crate is also his safe place when he is scared. He enjoys playing with soft toys, and chewing on digestible chew bones and carrots. Likes dogs of all sizes – no experience with cats – was OK meeting young children, but didn’t stay with them very long (headed for his crate instead and didn’t come out). He is shy meeting all new people, and it takes about a week for his true personality to emerge. Once he trusts, he follows his people around, snuggles, is sweet and loving (gives kisses), and grabs at your feet when he wants to play. Still does some gentle playbiting and chews on some of your things – you will need to work on gentle correction/ redirection. He has a submissive personality. Jovie is leash trained and sits on command. Because he can climb over a 3 ft. chain link fence, we recommend a 5 ft. fence for a secure outdoor enclosure. Previous dog experience would be helpful .

If you have questions, or would like to meet Jovie, please call 651-771-5662. He is current on distemper, rabies and Bordetella vaccinations. Tested negative for heartworm. Second Chance will provide supplies and dog food while you foster, and will pay for any pre-approved medical care.
