Jonah 22792's Story
If a cantankerous mop became sentient, you would have a good mental image of the condition Jonah arrived in from Mississippi. I never would have thought he would become so loving and affectionate. However with patience & love, ever continuing consent tests, training disguised as fun choice-based games, and a much needed hair cut, Jonah has softened. While still a bit capricious, this sweet man has learned the word, "Pets?" with his consent test and will shove his head into your open hand when he wants some lovin'.
This pint sized, clever dude is looking for an adult and older teenager only home who are confident in reading doggy body language so they can manage his resource guarding and moody behaviors. He can be such a Sourpatch kid, "First they're sour, then they're sweet!" especially late at night. Overall though he is a a wonderful pup, who has come very far, and with continued training he will continue to blossom into an even more awesome dog. If you can see your future days spent in a cuddle puddle with this little cloud, read on to learn more about Jonah.
Basics
Energy level: Low/Medium
House-trained: Yes, on a schedule and doing fabulous!
He does not like the rain and will refuse to go outside, unless you put him on a leash and go outside with him. He was a good boy and held it in for a 7 hour potty-strike on a very rainy day recently, until he finally went outside on a leash.
This will be Jonah's first Winter in Minnesota !!
If Jonah feels pressured or threatened he may submissive pee a tiny amount but this is easily avoidable, and should fade as his bond with you grows!
Temperament: Smart, a bit capricious, long memory.
Disposition: Friendly, playful, pretty chill guy. Very affectionate. Gets grumpy at night.
Coat/Grooming Needs: Hair cut every 2-4 months [best guess]. He let me give him a hair cut no problem, but may need to be muzzled for other grooming activities. [Nail trims.]
Compatibility Attributes
With people: Friendly and sweet. Likes to snuggle on chests, on or next to laps.
Reaction to new people: Curious/Friendly - wants pets and attention. Like most dogs he may bark a couple times when someone new comes in your house but then settles down quickly.

Large groups: Untested - will update

With kids: Unknown but not recommended
With dogs: Good with dogs of all sizes!
With cats: Unknown - will update
Current Home Life: Breakfast is served @ 9:30am and dinner is between 5:30-7:00pm. It's a pretty quiet house except for once a month when we have a large get together. Four people live here, along with one small dog who Jonah gets along with great. No separation anxiety symptoms.
Jonah has never gotten into things when left home alone!
Future Home & Shared Walls:
House or dog friendly apartment only.
How much does he bark on a 1-5 scale?: Was a 3, now he's a 2!
He is one of the least barky dachshunds I have ever met, but still a dachshund. He currently barks at some sounds around the house, like a distant door closing, someone cooking in another room, or a car honking outside...but that can continue to be reduced with training!
He does not bark while in the yard or out on walks.
Oddly, and kind of nice, when Jonah barks, he does one singular bark. Versus a succession of barks like most dogs do!
Fence:
Would be a big bonus, not a requirement.
One of Jonah's favorite things to do is just hang out in the yard & roll around with his ball in between games of fetch.
Other dogs in home:
Would do fine as a single dog, but another well trained, confident dog would be a bonus. A poorly trained, insecure dog would be a detriment to his training & behavior.
Personality and Behavioral Qualities
Nervous about: If you raise your hand too quickly he may flinch. Cars that backfire or sounds that are similar to gun shots.

Training:
Are they...Food motivated? Toy? Pets and Praise?:
Slightly food motivated, needs to be high value. Toy motivated - small tennis balls and stuffed toys. Likes pets, praise, and being baby-talked but idk if it's enough for a training reward. Jonah is a "soft dog" & does not not take it well if he fells pressured, stress, or like he is getting scolded. He will deflate, shut down, and retreat.
What does he know?: Name, bedtime routine [goes straight in kennel by himself]
What is he learning?: Come, sit, body handling [feet], impulse control, door manners, getting 'dressed', people near the kennel is fine, food puzzle toys
Nervous about: If you raise your arms/hands too quickly he may flinch. Cars that backfire, or sounds that are similar to gun shots.
On walks:

Exercise requirements: Low

Do they pull?: He is great on a leash! Doesn't heel yet, but also does not pull. He does really well at adjusting his pace to yours. Loves peeing on ALL the mail boxes.

Reactions to new or unusual sounds: Either..curious, doesn't notice, or doesn't care.

In the car:

Like car rides?: Yes

How do they ride?: Loose or with a doggy seatbelt. Appreciates sitting on a lap, but is not overly insistent about it like some dogs. Will settle down on an empty seat after a few minutes. Never had an accident in the car.

Any behavioral issues or quirks?: Yes. We are working on the everything listed below, except the last one.
Body handling - all feet. Making some small, slow progress here.
Resource guarding:
Locations...Kennel, recliner, dog beds - only with people. Going to teach him a 'get off' cue! For now leaving a drag leash on him makes him incredibly easy to move as needed.
Toys - No longer an issue with people thanks to playing Susan Garrett's It's Yer Choice game with his tennis balls!
With dogs he only guards really 'valuable' toys. EX: There was only ONE squeaky toy available and he growled at my dog for approaching while he was playing with it.
Making sure there is a variety of toys is an simple fix, &/or keeping toys put up and only having supervised play time.
Food - With people this has improved massively when it comes to dry kibble!! He is still a big butthole when wet food/high value food is at play.
With dogs - unsure. I always feed fosters separate from resident dogs as a preventative safety precaution.

Crate Training: Yes, but he is currently kennel reactive/resource guards kennel.
Do not reach in his kennel. He may suddenly lunge & bite. For now leaving a drag leash on him has made him easy to move as needed. Simply leave the handle of the leash outside the kennel and pick up before opening the door.
Slightly capricious nature - would not trust near young children.
To expand on that some more, his demeanor can shift quickly sometimes. A wrong touch, eye contact gone on to long, did you lean over him too much..? And suddenly you can see he's gotten in a funk. [Stiff body, whale eyes, lip licking, perhaps a paw is lifted up as a little 'white flag'..] You will need to stay aware of these behaviors and let him be when he gets cranky. If he retreats to his kennel do not reach in. Leave him alone. If he feels overly pressured or threatened, & like there is no other option, he may bite, or submissive pee a little bit. While he loves quickly, it may take some time to build up trust with him when it comes to the important things, like nail trims. It is very important Jonah goes to a home willing to take the time, continue the training, and give space as needed.
Social/Emotional needs: Adult & older teenager home only. An patient owner who will not use punitive training methods.

Physical needs: Needs help getting in/out of large vehicles. May need doggy stairs to get up on the couch as he ages. Currently hops up just fine.

Medical: Is getting neutered on November 23rd 2026.
It is recommended his new family get him a much needed cosmetic dental.

Other:

He is a little grudge holder! I accidentally stepped on his paw and it took him days to stop growling and cowering whenever I came into the room.
Happened a second time when he got some kind of Carex sedge [aka pokey plant / sticker plant] in his paws while on a walk, and I had to remove them.

He has a little Sid-The-Sloth-Lookin' overbite that cracks me up.

Jonah really is a cool little dude who LOVES HARD. He just has some boundaries and needs a dog savvy family. Does that sound like you?
