Johnny Steve's Story

Searching for a best friend for your dog, that never runs out of playful energy, and could very well be one of your most loyal companions? Look no further because Johnny Steve is your man!

Johnny is a sensitive guy, who came to the shelter as a 9 week old puppy, and was not given the same benefit of an early adoption that his siblings got. Due to being in the shelter for almost a year, Johnny developed a significant fear of humans. However, it only took one month in a home for him to let his foster mom pet him, pick him up, and take him on walks with ease.

Johnny is an A+ walker, with great leash manners and the occasional playful boop of the hand. He is still afraid of cars passing by and going potty while on leash, but he gets more confident with each walk he goes on. Johnny is a dog's best friend, in fact, he is every dog's best friend. While he might have a calm demeanor inside the house, he is as playful as they come in the backyard or the dog park. He can play rough with big dogs or play gentle with small dogs, he can race with the fast dogs or wrestle with the slow dogs. He loves playing in the water or chewing on a stick, is still learning how to fetch, is working on his recall, and is starting to accept treats from the hand.

Johnny is very smart and is crate trained, potty trained, and knows how to use the doggy door. He sleeps in an open crate overnight, but would prefer to lounge on the couch with his long legs. Johnny has turned into a wonderful house dog and would love to find his forever home. After 3 months in foster, he is starting to show his playful, silly, goofy, and happy personality to his foster mom, now that she has gained his trust. Johnny has the potential to be someone's fierce, loyal companion once he meets the right person who gives him the patience, love, and gentle care that he needs.

Johnny is still afraid of men and visitors in the home, however, he seems to be unbothered when strangers pass him by on walks. As such, he would do best in a home with a single woman or a couple with a very patient man. Johnny absolutely must have another dog friend in the home, as he looks to them for guidance and comfort. Because Johnny is still working on going potty during walks, he would do best in a home with a big backyard, especially a yard where he can play with his new best friend. Johnny has shown small signs of being destructive when left alone for long periods of time, or if he gets bored due to lack of exercise and mental stimulation. His adopter will need to be active and aware enough to give him the exercise and enrichment he needs.

He is currently in foster! We recommend you complete an adoption application at www.souldog.org/adopt or email adopt@souldog.org if you have any questions!
