Johnny's Story

Herrrrre’s Johnny!

Update - Johnny is good with cats!

This handsome black Lab is a sweet, gentle boy who may take a little time to let his personality shine, but once he feels comfortable, his loving nature comes through. Johnny is looking for a patient forever family who will give him the time and support he needs to feel safe and confident.

Johnny is 2-3 years old, about 50 pounds and is both house trained and crate trained; he truly enjoys his crate! He likes to sleep in his crate at night and happily goes in and out on his own whenever he feels like having some quiet time. His crate is his comfortable, safe space, and he knows how to settle in and relax.

Johnny has many “puppy” tendencies. We don’t know how much human contact he had before SAL rescued him, so he is still learning proper manners such as what is acceptable to play with and chew on and what is not. Johnny is very easy to redirect and a quick learner. He is very good with other dogs and truly seems to enjoy having canine companions around. In fact, Johnny would probably be happiest in a home with another dog who can help him feel comfortable and show him the ropes. A confident, friendly canine companion could be a wonderful friend for Johnny as he continues to build his confidence.

Johnny can be apprehensive at times, especially when he finds himself in a new environment or situation. He is not a dog who will immediately rush into a new place and act like he owns it. Instead, Johnny needs a little time to observe, take things in, and decide that everything is okay. Once he becomes comfortable, his super-sweet personality starts to shine.

Johnny’s future family will need to understand that patience is key. He will need time to adjust to a new home, new people, and a new routine. Giving him the space to decompress and allowing him to move at his own pace will help him feel the security he needs. Once Johnny knows he is safe and loved, he will blossom into an incredibly special companion.

Johnny is the kind of dog who reminds us that sometimes the sweetest relationships take a little time to develop. He may not be the first dog to run up and greet you, but give this boy the time he needs, and you will be rewarded with a loyal, loving friend.

Johnny has so much love to give and is ready for a family and a forever home of his very own. We think Johnny is going to make someone a very special best friend!

Johnny will be available for adoption in RI on, or after, September 18th, 2026

If you are interested in Johnny and are an approved adopter, please contact your Adoption Coordinator to be added to Johnny’s list. If you are not yet approved, you can find our adoption guidelines and application at: www.savealabrescue.org
