John Wayne aka Rip's Story

If you are looking for a good boy to call your own, look no further than John Wayne! (He has been called Rip by his foster as John Wayne doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue!). He is around 2 years old and weighs 60 pounds.

Rip is a playful and loving boy who would like nothing better than to be part of your family. He is very affectionate and a quick learner. He gets along with all his foster siblings and plays well with them. His favorite thing in the world is to play fetch! Guaranteed your arm will tire out long before he does!

Rip was a little nervous coming out of the shelter. But this shy boy quickly warmed up once he found he was safe. Now he makes friends everywhere. He loves his toys and if he can't find one, he will pick up whatever is nearby and carry it around. Rip not aggressive in any way and will share any toy, food, or attention. He wants so badly to play with his foster cat friends but needs to be watched closely because he might get a little rough in his excitement. Rip enjoys water and plays in the kiddie pool but hasn't quite found the courage to dive off the steps in the big pool. He would love to go on hiking and swimming adventures with his new family!

Rip undoubtedly lived as an outside dog before he was surrendered. He is about 75% house trained but still has the occasional accident. He is very eager to please and responds quickly to training and rewards. He has learned "sit" and "drop it". Rip still needs some training with leash walking and recognizing personal space. He has learned to love his crate and safe space and will rest quietly there. He only barks when excited. Rip will chew on inappropriate objects if toys aren't provided. He knows his name and will respond and be easily redirected.

Rip is a VERY playful and energetic young dog. He needs an active home with lots of room to run or long daily play sessions. He would likely benefit from another dog to play with and has played well even with smaller dogs. Although he hasn't been around children, he would be fine with a pre-teen or teenager. Rip is probably too much for little ones. He most likely missed out on the normal training a puppy should get so he is a little delayed learning the normal skills a dog needs, but he has caught on fast and is eager to please.

Rip loves people and other animals! He will do well with any family willing to continue his training and make sure he gets proper exercise and attention!

Rip will be available for adoption in RI on, or after, May 22nd, 2026

If you are interested in Rip and are an approved adopter, please contact your Adoption Coordinator to be added to Rip’s list. If you are a not yet approved, you can find our adoption guidelines and application at: www.savealabrescue.org

Rip is fostered in RI
