Joey

Joey has an extraordinary story, and he truly is an extraordinary dog. This is probably your one and only opportunity to own a veritable legend and a dog that will amaze you with his intuitive brilliance and his worldly wisdom: a bona fide full-blooded Indigenous dog of eminent pedigree!

We first met Joey in August 2022 along with over 60 other dogs in the backwoods of the Flathead Indian Reservation and originally named him Merlin. Over the next few months, his "clan" (including mother, father, sisters, brothers, cousins, nephews, nieces, uncles, aunties, etc.) and their Salish human caretakes would become like our adopted family. With some females being late-term pregnant, we ultimately helped 78 dogs and placed 65 of them from this single wooded home site. In the end, a few were left to help fend off the bears, but all were fixed.

Without going into great details and weaving endless stories (there were many), we will just say that all of these mutts were some of the most amazing, smartest, most resilient dogs we've ever met (and we've met many!). Some of them had become local legends - even therapy dogs for children. They were all off-the-charts intuitive and wise, loving and sensitive, quick to learn and please. They had no obsessions or ailments - a testament to their genetic strength. Several had genetic panels done, and these always came back with a mix of 20+ breeds. Their ability to self-heal, overcome trauma and hardship was simply miraculous.

All were quickly adopted over several months of hard work - Merlin (Joey) among them,

We have kept in touch with most of the families who adopted these amazing dogs, and we recently got a tragic call from one of the owners (a dear friend and kind lady) that she was diagnosed with terminal cancer and would need our help to find her dog a new home. In a short two months, the cancer ravaged her body and took our beloved friend, leaving Joey once again needing a loving home.

Joey and his extended family are indescribable. You just have to meet them to feel their extraordinary calm and loving power. We doubt another opportunity like this will arise again. Joey is available for adoption and safe with a caring foster family. We need to find him a loving home.

You can contact ARC Rising at 406-499-5018 for more information on the application process, and you can meet Joey in western Montana.

Adoption fee is $150.

P.S. Joey is good with all other animals after a proper and slow introduction, because he is a little sensitive and needs a few minutes to feel safe. He loves children and would prefer a peaceful, caring, not-overly-exuberant big family to keep him company and offer him love.
