Joe's Story

Joe stands right at your knee on a slack leash and looks back over his shoulder at you, like he is checking where the two of you are headed next.

He is a black and white hound with long soft ears, a black patch that covers one eye and ear, a white blaze down his face, and two small tan spots for eyebrows. His white legs are lightly freckled, and one ear has a habit of flipping inside out.

Joe is a sweet dog with a wandering spirit. He likes to be out and about, and he wants his person along for it. A walk with Joe is a walk where every smell gets a proper look. He is also dog friendly, so a home with a resident dog is on the table for him, and so is a home where he would be the only one.

A few honest things before you apply. Joe is a hound and he follows his nose, so he needs a leash on every walk and a yard that is secure. He seems to be cat friendly, but he has not lived with cats that we know of, so we would take introductions at home slowly. We have not seen him around young children, so we cannot tell you how he would do living with them.

We prefer to schedule appointments for meet and greets to make sure someone is available to spend time with you. The shelter is open Monday through Friday, 12pm to 4pm, and appointments outside of those hours may be available based on volunteer availability. Petersburg Animal Care & Control's Adoption Policy
Thank you for your interest in adopting from Petersburg Animal Care & Control! We’re so glad you’re considering giving a shelter pet a loving home. We do not charge an adoption fee; however, all animals must be spayed or neutered prior to adoption, and the cost of the procedure is covered by the adopter. We’re happy to support adopters by coordinating appointments with our low-cost veterinary partners for spay/neuter services and other basic care needs. Adoption Process • We prefer to schedule appointments for meet-and-greets to ensure that staff or volunteers are available to spend adequate time helping you get to know the animal. • When you arrive, please sign in and wait to be escorted by a staff member or volunteer before entering the kennel areas. • For safety reasons, please do not reach into kennels or attempt to touch animals through barriers. If you’re interested in a particular pet, our team will bring them to a meet-and-greet area for proper introductions. • After your visit, you’re welcome to submit an adoption application. Applications must be approved before we can schedule a meet-and-greet with your family pets. • Meet-and-greets with personal pets are by appointment only, and for safety, two staff members must be present to handle all animals involved. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to make each match the best fit possible — both for our animals and their future families.
