Jewel in Maine's Story

Jewel has an estimated DOB of January 2024

Jewel is settling into her Maine foster home. Her foster mom and dad report that she LOVES all humans, is very quiet and is learning what it's like to be loved.

She is being fostered in the city and may be happier in a more rural area. Her foster parents report the following:

We still can only go on very short walks before Jewel becomes panicked with the noise and activity on the street. She is getting much better about walking on a leash though and she is always excited to go out with us. She is going to the bathroom more regularly, but will only go if there isn't a lot of noise or people around, otherwise she takes us right back inside.

Jewel is very sweet and would gladly let you pet her all day long. She takes a little bit of time to warm up to new people, but once she does she will follow the new person around and lick their hand until she gets pet. She can be nervous outside when there is a lot of noise or activity, but she has been making progress and is getting good at walking on a leash. She avoids other dogs and kids, but is never aggressive. She is very smart and has quickly learned the commands, "come," "woah," "stop," and "no." She will quietly sit next to you all day as long as you give her the occasional pat. She loves her chew bone, hugs, licking your nose, ripping stuffed toys to shreds (but hasn't touched anything that isn't hers!), and will tap dance with joy when you get up in the morning. She is crate and house trained, but will need to learn a new schedule in her adoptive home. She doesn't like mint treats, she does like peanut butter and eating her food off a licky mat. She is very quick to solve food puzzles. If you haven't pet her in a while she'll remind you with a soft sigh. Jewel is lovely and will make a really good friend.

Jewel was found in the mountains by a hiker alone and vulnerable with 8 puppies in the middle of nowhere. She braved freezing temperatures and pouring rain, giving birth to eight beautiful puppies with no one to care for her. Without shelter, she did the only thing she could: she hid her newborns under rocks and in hollow tree stumps, shielding them from predators. Every day, Jewel risked her life searching for food, doing everything in her power to keep her puppies safe and alive.

Our rescue partner hurried to help, managing to rescue several puppies that day. Some, frightened, scattered and Jewel herself disappeared into the wild. The next day, she was seen again, bravely moving her babies to a new hiding place, always thinking of their safety. Thankfully, they were able to gather the rest of the puppies to safety, at last, all eight were secure.

A humane trap was set for Jewel, and within hours, this courageous mother was finally safe, too. Jewel is a Collie mix, estimated to be 2 years old, weighing about 29 pounds. Though she’s understandably shy at first, she has the gentlest heart. Once she feels safe, she’ll quietly climb into your lap and shower you with soft kisses. She’s wonderful with people, gets along well with other dogs, and has an incredibly gentle soul.

After everything she’s endured, Jewel deserves a home where she’ll never have to feel fear, hunger, or loneliness again. She has survived the wild to protect her babies, now, she just needs someone to give her the loving home she truly deserves.

YOUR ADOPTION FEE COVERS: Transport to Maine, age specific vaccinations, Health certificate, spay/neuter, microchip, heartworm/lyme/ehrlichia test, worming & martingale collar.

Adoption fees:
Through 6 months of age $450;
7 months to through 5 years $400;
6 years and under 9 years $325: bonded pairs are $500;
9 years and older $250: bonded pairs are $300

This dog is available unless it is marked as Pending, meaning Pending Adoption. This dog is in foster care locally, ONLY if Maine is listed next to the dogs name; otherwise, the dog is still waiting with our partner rescue for an adoption or foster home in New England.

All dogs have a current Health Certificate for transport. All imported dogs are quarantined 14 days prior to getting on transport. They've had annual heartworm tests and are on heartworm preventative.
