Jewel in Maine's Story
Jewel has an estimated DOB of January 2024

Jewel is settling into her Maine foster home. Her foster mom and dad report that she LOVES all humans, is very quiet and is learning what it's like to be loved.

She is being fostered in the city and may be happier in a more rural area. Her foster parents report the following:

Jewel is an ivy league dog and can now solve the advanced dog puzzle in a few minutes. She is very clever, be careful of your cheesy focaccia, she cannot resist stealing it!

She is getting very good at "sit," and she knows "no," "woah," "bed," and "stop." She might be the best crate trained dog we've hosted.

Walking her on a harness has made a huge difference. It's now very pleasant to walk her, and as long as there is not too much noise/activity, she enjoys being outside and taking long walks. No more choking on the martingale. We haven't seen her limp or walk funny on her right hind leg for a while now.

She is so sweet, her morning tap dance greeting is the best.

Jewel is very sweet and would gladly let you pet her all day long. She takes a little bit of time to warm up to new people, but once she does she will follow the new person around and lick their hand until she gets pet. She can be nervous outside when there is a lot of noise or activity, but she has been making progress and is getting good at walking on a leash. She avoids other dogs and kids, but is never aggressive. She is very smart and has quickly learned the commands, "come," "woah," "stop," and "no." She will quietly sit next to you all day as long as you give her the occasional pat. She loves her chew bone, hugs, licking your nose, ripping stuffed toys to shreds (but hasn't touched anything that isn't hers!), and will tap dance with joy when you get up in the morning. She is crate and house trained, but will need to learn a new schedule in her adoptive home. She doesn't like mint treats, she does like peanut butter and eating her food off a licky mat. She is very quick to solve food puzzles. If you haven't pet her in a while she'll remind you with a soft sigh. Jewel is lovely and will make a really good friend.

One of paws and toes seemed to look like it was slightly deformed and Jewel visited our vet to have an x-ray. It was determined that at some point in her life, she may have been shot at. She has some small metal fragments in her paw and leg. This is not causing her any problems and we would not have know this about her, other than noticing her deformed toes.

Jewels back story:

Jewel was found in the mountains by a hiker alone and vulnerable with 8 puppies in the middle of nowhere. She braved freezing temperatures and pouring rain, giving birth to eight beautiful puppies with no one to care for her. Without shelter, she did the only thing she could: she hid her newborns under rocks and in hollow tree stumps, shielding them from predators. Every day, Jewel risked her life searching for food, doing everything in her power to keep her puppies safe and alive.

A humane trap was set for Jewel, and within hours, this courageous mother was finally safe, too. Jewel is a Collie mix, estimated to be 2 years old, weighing about 29 pounds. Though she’s understandably shy at first, she has the gentlest heart. Once she feels safe, she’ll quietly climb into your lap and shower you with soft kisses. She’s wonderful with people, gets along well with other dogs, and has an incredibly gentle soul.

YOUR ADOPTION FEE COVERS: Transport to Maine, age specific vaccinations, Health certificate, spay/neuter, microchip, heartworm/lyme/ehrlichia test, worming & martingale collar.

Adoption fees:
Through 6 months of age $450;
7 months to through 5 years $400;
6 years and under 9 years $325: bonded pairs are $500;
9 years and older $250: bonded pairs are $300

This dog is available unless it is marked as Pending, meaning Pending Adoption.
