JD's Story

JD is a 8(ish) year old Shih Tzu that is in need of a very special forever home.
JD came to us as a stray, so not much of his previous life is known. However, we have learned a lot about this little guy, and we are looking for a specific owner for him.
First and foremost, JD needs to be the only pet. He does not like other animals. He’d prefer just one or two adult humans to call his own, as he is selective of who he attaches to. JD can be very sweet. He loves to play with his stuffed toys, and even sit on a lap while doing so. He enjoys running in a fenced-in yard, playing fetch, and sometimes taking walks. JD does not always love petting attention. Sometimes this sets him off and he becomes agitated. He needs a strong owner who will reinforce positive behavior and work with him through negatives. It would be best to not allow him on furniture, as he gets settled and becomes grumpy if moved or disturbed. However, he adores his dog beds. He enjoys banana and carrot treats for positive reinforcement. It is best to leave him alone while eating his meals or chewing on a bone, though he will take treats from your hand nicely. Sometimes JD will welcome being leashed for walks, and other times he does not like it, so a fenced yard for exercise and relieving himself would be ideal. JD has been crate trained and knows some basic commands. His ideal owner would continue to work with him on these and show him that he is not in charge, but of course, in a loving way. JD does have a lot of love to give, though often he chooses when he wants the attention and affection. We are looking for an adopter who is committed to helping JD be the best pet he can be. We are willing to send JD to a trainer for the potential adopter who agrees to follow through with all of the knowledge and strategies the trainer provides.
